Gstaad and Crans-Montana pair well for a relaxed, sunny ski week: start among the chalets of the Saanenland, then move to the south-facing plateau above the Rhône valley. Gstaad is about 160 km and 2 h from Geneva Airport, Crans-Montana about 190 km and 2 h 15, and the transfer between them takes around two hours. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive all three legs, from GVA to Gstaad, across to Crans-Montana and back to the airport.
- First base: Gstaad, about 160 km / 2 h from GVA
- Second base: Crans-Montana, about 190 km / 2 h 15 from GVA
- Between them: around 2 h, typically via the Col du Pillon and the Rhône valley
- Border crossing: none, the trip stays in Switzerland
- Best for: couples, intermediates and travellers who value atmosphere and sunshine
Two stylish resorts with different personalities
Gstaad is a village of wooden chalets in the Bernese Oberland, close to the border with Vaud, known for its car-free Promenade, upmarket boutiques and discreet atmosphere. Its skiing is spread across several areas around the Saanenland rather than one giant network, with gentle, scenic slopes at Eggli, Wispile and Rinderberg, and higher terrain towards Saanenmöser and Zweisimmen. Nearby, Glacier 3000 above the Col du Pillon offers high-altitude skiing and the Peak Walk suspension bridge between two summits.
Crans-Montana is a different proposition: a large resort on a sun-drenched plateau facing south across the Rhône valley, with views from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc on clear days. Its slopes run from the Plaine Morte glacier down through larch forests, and the long, wide runs suit intermediates. The resort is also known for golf in summer and for hosting international events. Together the two give you a week of varied scenery: Alpine pastures and chalets first, then wide horizons and sunshine.
Getting to Gstaad from Geneva Airport
The drive from GVA follows Lake Geneva past Lausanne towards Montreux and Aigle, then climbs through the Ormont valley over the Col du Pillon to Gstaad, or via Bulle and Château-d'Oex through the Pays-d'Enhaut, depending on conditions. Either way it takes about 2 h for 160 km. The Pays-d'Enhaut route is gentler in winter, and your chauffeur will choose according to the weather. Arriving by private car is particularly handy in Gstaad, where many chalets lie outside the centre.
The mid-week move to Crans-Montana
From Gstaad, the classic route to Crans-Montana crosses the Col du Pillon to Les Diablerets, descends to Aigle and follows the Rhône valley past Martigny and Sion to Sierre, before climbing to the plateau. The journey takes about two hours in normal conditions. Combining the move with a stop at Glacier 3000 on the Col du Pillon makes a memorable day if the weather is clear.
- Check the Pillon road in the morning; snowfall can slow it, and the route via Bulle is an alternative.
- Schedule the move for a weekday to avoid changeover traffic.
- Ask your Crans-Montana accommodation about parking and luggage drop-off, as some streets are narrow.
Planning the week
A balanced plan is three nights in Gstaad and four in Crans-Montana, giving you more time on the bigger ski area. Lift passes are separate, so buy each for your days there. Non-skiers are well catered for in both resorts: winter walking paths, horse-drawn sleigh rides, spas and shopping in Gstaad, and sunny terraces, walks along the plateau's small lakes and a lively village centre in Crans-Montana. Sion, the capital of Valais, with its two castle hills, Valère and Tourbillon, makes an easy half-day trip from Crans-Montana.
Both resorts are popular during the festive season and February holidays, so book accommodation and transfers early for those weeks. Outside them, January and March often bring quieter slopes and plenty of sunshine.
Return to Geneva
From Crans-Montana, the return to Geneva Airport descends to Sierre and follows the Rhône valley and Lake Geneva motorway, about 2 h 15 in normal traffic. If you end the week in Gstaad instead, the drive is about 2 h. Leave a margin on Saturdays and in bad weather.
