A ski week in Verbier and Zermatt works neatly as three or four nights in each resort, with a mid-week drive of a couple of hours along the Rhône valley between them. Verbier is about 160 km and 2 h from Geneva Airport, and the drop-off point for car-free Zermatt, Täsch, is about 231 km and 2 h 35 from GVA. AirportsTransfers.ch can take you to Verbier, across to Täsch mid-week and back to the airport at the end.
- First stay: Verbier, about 160 km / 2 h from GVA
- Second stay: Zermatt, via Täsch (about 231 km / 2 h 35 from GVA)
- Mid-week move: Verbier to Täsch, roughly two hours via Martigny and Visp
- Border crossing: none, the whole trip stays in Switzerland
- Best for: confident skiers who want two contrasting Valais resorts
Two resorts, one canton
Verbier and Zermatt are both in Valais, but they feel quite different. Verbier sits on a sunny balcony above the Val de Bagnes and is the hub of the 4 Vallées, a large linked area that stretches towards Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon. Its reputation rests on steep terrain and off-piste around Mont Fort, Mont Gelé and the Bec des Rosses, and the village has a lively après-ski scene. Zermatt is a car-free village at the end of the Mattertal, dominated by the Matterhorn, with skiing across Sunnegga-Rothorn, Gornergrat and the high glacier sector that connects to Cervinia in Italy. The atmosphere is quieter and more traditional, with horse-drawn sleighs and electric taxis in the streets.
Putting them together gives you a week that moves from the energy of Verbier to the grandeur of Zermatt, and from big freeride faces to long scenic descents with the most photographed mountain in the Alps always in view.
Arrival: Geneva Airport to Verbier
The drive from GVA follows the motorway along Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then turns into the Rhône valley to Martigny. From there the road climbs into the Val de Bagnes to Le Châble and up the hairpins to Verbier, about 160 km and 2 h in total. A private car can take you to your chalet door, which is useful in a village spread across a steep hillside. If you prefer, you can also be dropped at Le Châble and take the gondola up, though most visitors with luggage choose the door-to-door option.
The mid-week move to Zermatt
On transfer day you drive back down to Martigny and follow the Rhône valley east past Sion and Sierre to Visp, then south into the Mattertal to Täsch. Allow about two hours in normal conditions. Since Zermatt is car-free, the car stops at the Täsch terminal and you take the shuttle train for the final few minutes. A good rhythm is to ski Verbier on the morning of the move, eat a late lunch, then leave so you reach Zermatt in time to settle in before dinner.
- Ask your Verbier hotel or chalet to store bags until early afternoon.
- Keep a small bag with essentials for the shuttle train so you are not unpacking on the platform.
- Check whether your Zermatt accommodation sends an electric shuttle to the station.
- Plan the move for a weekday, avoiding the Saturday changeover traffic in the Rhône valley.
Choosing your lift passes
Because Verbier and Zermatt are not linked, you will need separate passes, or a regional product if one suits your plans in a given season. Buying for the exact number of days in each place is usually the most flexible approach. Zermatt's pass can include the Italian side, so if you intend to ski across to Cervinia for a day, choose the international version. In Verbier, check whether you want the whole 4 Vallées or the local Verbier sector only.
Return to Geneva and timing tips
From Zermatt you take the shuttle train down to Täsch, where your chauffeur is waiting, and the drive back to GVA takes about 2 h 35 in normal traffic. On a Saturday, add margin for queues in the Rhône valley and around Lausanne. An afternoon flight gives you a calm final morning. If you are flying very early, consider spending the last night closer to the airport rather than leaving Zermatt before dawn.
