A Zermatt and Cervinia ski safari lets you ski the Swiss and Italian sides of the Matterhorn, crossing the border on skis while your bags travel separately by road. Zermatt is car-free, so a private transfer from Geneva Airport drops you at Täsch, about 231 km and 2 h 35 away, where a shuttle train covers the last stretch (Zermatt itself is about 235 km and 3 h 15 from GVA by the full route). AirportsTransfers.ch can drive the arrival, the luggage leg round to Cervinia and the return.
- Bases: Zermatt (Switzerland) and Breuil-Cervinia (Italy)
- From GVA: about 231 km / 2 h 35 to Täsch, then the shuttle train to Zermatt
- Link on skis: the lifts and glacier pistes above Testa Grigia and Plateau Rosa
- By road between bases: a long detour around the mountain, several hours
- Border: the road route crosses the border into Italy
One mountain, two countries, two styles
The Matterhorn stands on the frontier between Valais and the Aosta Valley, and the ski areas on each side are connected high up across the Theodul glacier. Zermatt, on the Swiss side, is a car-free village of chalets and grand hotels, with skiing spread across Sunnegga-Rothorn, Gornergrat and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise sector. Breuil-Cervinia, on the Italian side, sits at the head of the Valtournenche and is known for long, wide, sunny pistes that suit intermediates and anyone who enjoys cruising. Valtournenche, further down the same valley, belongs to the same lift system.
Doing both in one trip gives you very different days: steep runs and mountain restaurants with Matterhorn views in Zermatt, then the broad, easy-going descents and Italian lunches of Cervinia. An international lift pass covers both sides, though you can also buy each area separately and add day extensions.
Arriving in Zermatt from Geneva Airport
The route from GVA follows Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then runs up the Rhône valley through Martigny and Sion towards Visp, where the road turns south into the Mattertal. Cars are not allowed into Zermatt, so private transfers stop at Täsch, about 231 km and 2 h 35 from the airport. From the Täsch terminal a shuttle train runs up to Zermatt in a few minutes, and electric taxis or hotel shuttles take you from the station to your accommodation.
Your chauffeur can help you onto the shuttle with skis and bags. Packing into a small number of rolling cases, rather than many loose pieces, makes the change from car to train much easier.
The crossing: skis over, bags around
The appeal of this safari is that you can ski from one country to the other. On the day you move, you ski across from the Swiss side to the Italian side over the glacier and finish at Cervinia, carrying only a small day pack. Your main luggage cannot follow the same route, and the road journey between Zermatt and Cervinia is long, because the Matterhorn sits squarely between the two. The usual way round is down the Rhône valley, over or under the Great St Bernard into the Aosta Valley, then up the Valtournenche. Allow several hours.
This is where a chauffeured luggage transfer earns its keep. You leave your bags at your Zermatt hotel in the morning, they are brought down to Täsch and driven round to Cervinia, and they are waiting when you arrive after a day on the slopes. Points to check before you commit:
- The high crossing depends on weather and lift operations; strong wind can close the link, so keep a road plan in reserve.
- Carry identity documents on the ski day, as you are changing country.
- Confirm the time your hotel releases luggage and the time your Cervinia accommodation can receive it.
- Skis travel with you, so only declare them for the arrival and return transfers.
Returning to Geneva from Cervinia
At the end of the week you can return directly from Cervinia to Geneva Airport by road. The drive runs down the Valtournenche to the Aosta motorway and back into Switzerland through the Great St Bernard tunnel, or via the Mont Blanc Tunnel and Chamonix depending on conditions and your chauffeur's advice. It is a long day, so book a flight in the afternoon or evening rather than the morning. An alternative is to plan the safari the other way round, starting in Cervinia and finishing in Zermatt, which some travellers prefer for a shorter final transfer.
Booking the Matterhorn safari with AirportsTransfers.ch
All three road legs can be reserved online at a fixed price per vehicle that you see before you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. On arrival your driver meets you at GVA with a name sign, having followed your flight, and waiting is included if you land late. For a couple, the E-Class Business Sedan is enough; for families or groups with skis, choose the V-Class Van, which seats up to seven with ten bags. Child seats can be added when you book. To arrange the luggage leg between the two resorts, send the details by WhatsApp or phone on +41 78 346 56 77 and AirportsTransfers.ch will confirm collection and drop-off times.
