Courmayeur and La Thuile: An Aosta Valley Ski Week via Mont Blanc

Through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Italy: split a ski week between Courmayeur and La Thuile, linked by a short valley drive.

Courmayeur and La Thuile make an easy Italian ski week from Geneva: both sit at the top of the Aosta Valley, a short drive apart, and Courmayeur is only about 107 km and 1 h 30 from Geneva Airport via the Mont Blanc Tunnel. Split the week in the middle and you get Courmayeur's town life and Mont Blanc views, then La Thuile's wide, uncrowded slopes. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you through the tunnel, across to La Thuile mid-week and back to GVA.

  • First base: Courmayeur, about 107 km / 1 h 30 from GVA
  • Second base: La Thuile, a short drive from Courmayeur
  • Route: through France and the Mont Blanc Tunnel into Italy
  • Border crossing: the route crosses into France, then into Italy
  • Best for: food lovers, intermediates and anyone wanting a short transfer to Italy

Italian skiing, close to Geneva

Few people realise how quickly you can be in Italy from Geneva. The Mont Blanc Tunnel takes you under the massif from Chamonix to the Val Veny and Val Ferret side, emerging just above Courmayeur. The town has a pedestrian main street, Via Roma, lined with shops and cafés, and a firmly Italian approach to lunch on the mountain. Its ski area, Courmayeur Mont Blanc, is not huge but has striking views, and the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car climbs towards Punta Helbronner for spectacular panoramas and, with a guide, access to high-mountain off-piste.

La Thuile lies a little further down and across, at the foot of the Little St Bernard Pass. Its ski area is linked across the border to La Rosière in France, forming the Espace San Bernardo, so you can ski into France and back in a day. Slopes are wide and often quiet, with plenty for intermediate skiers and some good tree runs on snowy days.

Getting there from Geneva Airport

The route leaves Geneva on the motorway towards Chamonix, crossing into France and following the Arve valley. Before Chamonix it turns up to the Mont Blanc Tunnel entrance. After the tunnel you are in Italy, and Courmayeur is just a few minutes down the road, about 107 km and 1 h 30 from GVA in total in normal traffic. Expect some waiting at the tunnel at busy times, especially on Saturdays. A private transfer avoids juggling bus changes with ski bags, and your driver handles tunnel formalities.

The mid-week move to La Thuile

From Courmayeur the road runs down the valley to Pré-Saint-Didier, known for its thermal baths, then climbs towards the Little St Bernard to La Thuile. It is a short transfer, usually well under an hour, so you can ski a final morning in Courmayeur, enjoy a long lunch and be in La Thuile for the afternoon. A stop at the Pré-Saint-Didier spa is a pleasant way to break the day if timings allow.

  • Agree a luggage storage time with your Courmayeur accommodation.
  • Plan the move on a weekday rather than a Saturday.
  • Consider passes: local passes for each resort, or a regional Aosta Valley pass if you want to roam further.

Food, rest days and the wider valley

The Aosta Valley's cuisine is a highlight of any ski week here: Fontina cheese, polenta, hearty soups, cured meats and local wines from vineyards along the valley floor. On a rest day you can visit Aosta, with its Roman remains including the Praetorian Gate and the Arch of Augustus, or simply relax in the spa at Pré-Saint-Didier. Courmayeur's Val Ferret is also popular for cross-country skiing and winter walks.

The rhythm of the week also differs between the two bases. Courmayeur's evenings centre on the town, with aperitivo in the bars along Via Roma and dinner in family-run trattorias, while La Thuile is calmer and suits early nights before first lifts. Many visitors find that four nights in Courmayeur and three in La Thuile gives the right balance, though families with young children sometimes reverse it to spend longer on La Thuile's gentle, spacious slopes.

Return to GVA

From La Thuile, the return goes back via Pré-Saint-Didier and Courmayeur to the Mont Blanc Tunnel, then to Geneva. Allow a little longer than the Courmayeur journey and add margin for tunnel queues on busy days. An afternoon flight gives you time to ski a final morning if you wish.
