Ski Safari: Chamonix and Verbier via the Col de la Forclaz

Two freeride capitals, one week: start under Mont Blanc in Chamonix, then cross the Col de la Forclaz to Verbier and the 4 Vallées.

Chamonix and Verbier make a natural ski safari: two freeride capitals on either side of the French-Swiss border, linked by a scenic mountain road over the Col de la Forclaz. Chamonix is about 90 km and 1 h 15 from Geneva Airport, Verbier about 160 km and 2 h, and the move between them takes a couple of hours through Vallorcine and Martigny. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you from GVA to Chamonix, over the pass to Verbier, and back to the airport.

  • First base: Chamonix, about 90 km / 1 h 15 from GVA
  • Second base: Verbier, about 160 km / 2 h from GVA
  • Link: Col des Montets, Vallorcine and the Col de la Forclaz to Martigny
  • Border crossing: into France for Chamonix, back into Switzerland on the way to Verbier
  • Best for: strong skiers, freeriders and anyone keen on high-mountain scenery

Two freeride capitals, very different characters

Chamonix is a working mountain town at the foot of Mont Blanc rather than a purpose-built resort. Its ski areas are scattered along the valley: Brévent and Flégère facing the Mont Blanc massif, Grands Montets above Argentière with steep, high terrain, and Balme at the top of the valley for easier days. The Aiguille du Midi cable car is the gateway to the Vallée Blanche, a famous glacier descent that should only be skied with a qualified mountain guide. The town itself has a strong climbing culture, a lively centre and plenty to do on a rest day.

Verbier, by contrast, is a chalet village on a sunny shelf above the Val de Bagnes and the centre of the 4 Vallées. Its lifts reach Mont Fort, and the slopes around Mont Gelé and the Bec des Rosses are well known in freeride circles. Where Chamonix asks you to move between separate areas, Verbier lets you ski a large connected domain from your door. Combining the two gives you raw alpine terrain at the start of the week and a slicker, more connected experience at the end.

Getting to Chamonix from Geneva Airport

The shortest drive of the trip comes first. From GVA the motorway heads south-east into France along the Arve valley, past Cluses and Sallanches, and climbs into the Chamonix valley. In normal traffic it takes about 1 h 15 for 90 km, which makes Chamonix one of the most accessible big-mountain destinations from Geneva. Even with a lunchtime landing, you can usually collect lift passes and rental gear the same afternoon.

Crossing the Col de la Forclaz to Verbier

The transfer day is the highlight of this itinerary. From Chamonix the road climbs past Argentière to the Col des Montets, drops into Vallorcine and crosses into Switzerland at the frontier near Le Châtelard. It then climbs to the Col de la Forclaz, with views over the Trient valley, before descending in a long series of bends to Martigny. From there you take the Val de Bagnes road to Le Châble and up to Verbier. Allow about two hours in good conditions.

Mountain roads in winter need respect, and a few precautions help:

  • Check road conditions the day before; snowfall can slow the passes, and occasionally an alternative route is needed.
  • Plan the move for a morning when you are not skiing, or after a short final session.
  • Keep warm layers and water in the car, as the journey includes stops and photographs at the col.
  • Leave flexibility in your Verbier check-in time in case of slower driving.

Getting the most from the week

A balanced split is three nights in Chamonix and four in Verbier, or the other way round if you want to finish with the shortest drive home. If off-piste is part of your plan, book guides in advance for both resorts: the terrain is serious, and local knowledge of snow conditions and avalanche risk is essential. Lift passes are separate, so buy each for the days you will use. Chamonix's rest-day options include the Montenvers rack railway to the Mer de Glace, while Verbier offers a quieter village atmosphere with spas and walking paths.

Return to GVA

From Verbier, the drive back to Geneva Airport follows the Rhône valley and Lake Geneva motorway and takes about 2 h. If you reverse the itinerary and end in Chamonix, the return is about 1 h 15, which makes a morning flight easier to catch. Either way, book a margin for Saturday traffic.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Chamonix to Verbier?
About two hours in good conditions, via the Col des Montets, Vallorcine, the Col de la Forclaz and Martigny.
Is the Col de la Forclaz open in winter?
It is a main road between Martigny and Chamonix and is normally kept open, but snowfall can slow it. Your chauffeur checks conditions before departure.
Which resort should come first?
Either works. Ending in Chamonix gives the shorter drive back to Geneva Airport, about 1 h 15, which helps with an earlier flight.
