Sedrun
Sedrun is about 314 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 3 h 50 min on the direct route through Valais, the Furka and the Oberalp, in the Romansh-speaking Surselva region of Graubünden. In winter the Furka and Oberalp passes are closed to road traffic, so the journey uses car-carrying trains or a longer road detour, and needs planning. AirportsTransfers.ch organises the route with you at booking, at a fixed price per vehicle.
- Distance from GVA: about 314 km on the direct route
- Drive time: around 3 h 50 min, longer in winter depending on routing
- Border crossing: none, the route stays in Switzerland
- Ski area: linked with Andermatt over the Oberalp Pass
- Suits: intermediates, freeriders and travellers who like a quiet base
Getting there from Geneva Airport
The direct route follows Lake Geneva and the Rhône valley to Brig, then climbs up the Goms to Oberwald. In winter the Furka Pass is closed, so cars travel through the Furka base tunnel on a car-carrying train to Realp, then continue by road to Andermatt. Beyond Andermatt, the Oberalp Pass road to Sedrun is also closed in winter, and the final leg relies on rail transport or on reaching Sedrun from the east via Chur and Disentis, which is considerably longer.
Because of these seasonal constraints, the journey time in winter often differs from the summer figure. Many travellers choose to be driven to Andermatt and continue by the Matterhorn Gotthard railway over the Oberalp to Sedrun, a scenic ride on the line used by the Glacier Express. When you book, explain where you are staying and we will confirm the most practical arrangement for your dates.
The ski area
Sedrun's slopes are linked with Andermatt via the Oberalp Pass, forming a larger area that also reaches towards Disentis. Local lifts climb from the village to wide, sunny slopes, and the link over the pass connects with the Gemsstock and Andermatt sectors. The terrain is varied, with long red and blue runs and plenty of off-piste after snowfall.
The region has a reputation for heavy snowfalls, as storms from both north and south can reach it. Freeriders appreciate the open terrain around the Oberalp and the Gemsstock, but these slopes are avalanche-prone and should be skied with a qualified guide. Beginners and families have gentle areas near Sedrun itself.
The village and the Surselva
Sedrun is the main village of the municipality of Tujetsch, at the top of the Surselva, the upper Rhine valley. It is a Romansh-speaking area, and you will see the language on signs and hear it in the shops. The village has traditional wooden and stone houses, a church and a relaxed, unhurried feel, quite different from the busier resorts of Valais.
Near the Oberalp Pass, Lake Toma is regarded as the source of the Rhine, and the Glacier Express passes through the village. Disentis, further down the valley, has a large Benedictine monastery.
When to go
The season generally runs from December to April. January can be very snowy and cold, with good powder after storms. February is busy with school holidays. In March and April, long sunny days make the slopes pleasant, and the high terrain around the Oberalp holds snow well.
The link with Andermatt depends on weather, as the Oberalp is exposed to wind and snow; check lift status each morning.
Sedrun works well for a mixed holiday, with cross-country trails along the valley floor, winter walking paths and sledging, and the option of a day trip by train to Andermatt or down the Surselva to Disentis.
Practical tips
Plan your arrival time carefully if your route involves car-carrying trains, which run to a timetable and may have queues at busy times. Pack in bags that are easy to handle if you transfer to the railway in Andermatt. Bring Swiss francs or a card for small purchases.
For the return, allow a generous margin: depending on the routing, plan around four and a half to five hours from Sedrun to Geneva Airport, more after heavy snow.
Booking your transfer
With AirportsTransfers.ch, you see the fixed price for the vehicle before paying and settle online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
