The route from Geneva Airport

Leaving the airport, the chauffeur heads south past Geneva and into France on the motorway towards Chamonix, then through the Mont Blanc Tunnel into Italy. On the Italian side the motorway runs down the Aosta Valley, past castles and vineyards, and on across the Piedmont plain to the outskirts of Turin. From there you continue south towards Cuneo and Mondovì, with the arc of the Maritime Alps rising ahead. The last part leaves the motorway and climbs through the Ellero and Maudagna valleys to Prato Nevoso. When the Mont Blanc Tunnel is closed for maintenance, the Great St Bernard Tunnel is the usual alternative, and the driver adapts the route accordingly. Most of the journey is on motorway, which makes it smoother than the distance suggests.

The ski area: Mondolè Ski

Prato Nevoso is part of the Mondolè Ski area, which it shares with Artesina and Frabosa Soprana. The slopes spread across rounded mountains around the Mondolè, with mostly red and blue runs that suit intermediates, children and progressing skiers. There are some steeper sections for confident skiers, a snowpark, and good opportunities for gentle off-piste after fresh snow, though as always this should be done with a guide. One of the pleasures of skiing here is the view: on clear days you look out over the Piedmont plain towards the distant Alps, and the light can be beautiful in late afternoon. The proximity of the Mediterranean means the area can receive heavy snowfalls from southern weather systems, sometimes when the northern Alps are dry.

For a week's stay, the linked area offers enough variety to keep most skiers busy. Families often stay on the Prato Nevoso side, where ski schools and beginners' slopes are close to the accommodation, and use the links to Artesina for longer journeys across the area. Weekdays outside Italian school holidays are generally quiet, while Sundays can be busy with visitors from Turin and the Ligurian coast.

The resort

Prato Nevoso is a purpose-built resort, designed around skiing, with apartment buildings, hotels, shops and restaurants close to the lifts. It is practical rather than picturesque, which suits families who want ski-in, ski-out convenience and short walks with children and equipment. In the evening there are pizzerias, bars and a relaxed Italian atmosphere. For a more traditional setting, the old towns of Mondovì and Cuneo are within easy reach for an afternoon visit, and the local cuisine of Piedmont, from cheeses to hearty pasta dishes, is a real draw.

When to go and practical tips

The season normally runs from December to March. January and early March are often the best value and the quietest periods, while Christmas, New Year and February holidays are busier. Saturday is the usual changeover day for weekly rentals. In winter, snow chains must be carried on Italian mountain roads, and our vehicles are fully equipped for winter conditions. Check your accommodation's check-in time, especially if you are arriving on an early flight: with a journey of over four hours, you will often reach the resort in the afternoon. Declare skis and snowboards at booking so the right vehicle is allocated.

The return journey

Allow around four and a half hours for the trip back to Geneva, plus time for check-in. Tunnel traffic can build up on Saturdays and at the end of holiday weeks. Your chauffeur will agree a pick-up time with you and keep an eye on conditions on the day.
