Braunwald
Braunwald is a car-free village in the canton of Glarus, and getting there from Geneva Airport means a drive of about 364 km, roughly 4 hours 15 minutes, to Linthal, followed by a short funicular ride up to the resort. Since no cars can drive into the village, a door-to-door transfer stops at the valley station. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you from the arrivals hall to the funicular in Linthal, with your skis and luggage unloaded right at the entrance.

From Geneva Airport to Linthal
The journey crosses almost the whole width of Switzerland. From the airport you take the motorway along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, then across the Plateau via Bern and on towards Zurich. Beyond Zurich the route follows the lake shore east, and shortly before Lake Walen you leave the motorway and head south into the Glarus valley. The valley is narrow and steep-sided, framed by the limestone walls of the Glärnisch, and the road continues past the town of Glarus up to Linthal, at the very end of the valley road. The funicular station is here. The motorway section is straightforward, but traffic around Bern and Zurich at peak hours can add time, so a mid-morning or early-afternoon departure from Geneva often gives the smoothest drive.
The funicular and arriving in a car-free village
The Braunwald funicular climbs from Linthal to the sunny terrace on which the village sits, high above the valley floor. It is part of the experience: within minutes you leave the road behind and arrive in a place where the only traffic is pedestrians, sledges and small electric vehicles. Luggage travels up with you on the funicular, and many hotels and holiday flats organise transport of bags from the top station, so it is worth asking your accommodation in advance how they handle arrivals. Pack in soft bags where possible, as they are easier to move around on the final stretch.
The ski area
Braunwald's slopes spread across the sunny, south-east facing mountainside above the village, up towards the Gumen area beneath the striking rock peaks of the Eggstöcke and Ortstock. The ski area is small and mostly easy to intermediate, with wide, gentle runs that are well suited to children, beginners and anyone returning to skiing after a break. Strong skiers looking for steep pistes will cover it quickly, but they may enjoy the quiet, the absence of queues and the views across the valley to the Tödi, the highest summit in the Glarus Alps. Sledging runs, winter walking paths and snowshoe trails add plenty of variety for non-skiers and for rest days.
The village and the atmosphere
Without cars, Braunwald has an unusually calm feel. Chalets and older hotels are spread across meadows and woods rather than clustered around a central square, and paths link everything together. Evenings are quiet, with dinners in the village and starry skies rather than nightlife. The setting is ideal for families with young children, couples who want to switch off, and anyone who likes walking in snow-covered landscapes. Because the village sits on a terrace facing the sun, it often enjoys bright winter days even when the valley below is in shade.
Best time to go and practical tips
The main season runs from December to March. As the ski area is not particularly high, snow conditions are generally best in mid-winter, from January to early March, and it is wise to check the snow report before a late-season trip. Saturday is the typical changeover day, and traffic on the main motorways can be heavier, particularly around Zurich. Snow chains are rarely needed on the valley road to Linthal, but our vehicles are equipped for winter conditions in any case. Bring everything you need for the week, as shops in the village are limited, and remember warm boots for walking: in a car-free resort you will be on foot a good deal. Skis and boot bags should be mentioned when booking.
