Laax

Laax lies about 421 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of roughly 4 hours 25 minutes via Bern, Zurich and Chur, followed by the short climb into the Surselva. Known across Europe for its terrain parks and freestyle culture, it is also a big all-round ski area shared with Flims and Falera. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you directly from the airport to the base at Laax Murschetg or to the old village, with boards and skis loaded in the boot.

  • Distance from GVA: about 421 km
  • Drive time: around 4 h 25
  • Border crossing: none
  • Ski area: Flims Laax Falera, up to the Vorab glacier
  • Best for: freestyle and snowboarding, intermediates, ski-in ski-out stays

The route from Geneva Airport

The route crosses Switzerland from west to east. From the airport, the motorway runs along Lake Geneva to Lausanne and then over the Plateau via Bern to Zurich. Beyond Zurich it follows the lake shores east to the Rhine valley and turns south to Chur. Shortly after Chur the road leaves the valley floor, climbs through the forests to Flims and continues a few kilometres further west to Laax. The main lift station is at Laax Murschetg, just below the old village of Laax Dorf. The whole route is on major roads kept open throughout the winter, so the journey is long but predictable. Expect heavier traffic around Zurich and Chur on Saturdays and on Sunday evenings, when weekend visitors return to the cities.

The ski area: parks, pipes and long cruising runs

From Laax Murschetg, lifts climb to Crap Sogn Gion, the heart of the ski area, and on to Crap Masegn and the Vorab glacier, the highest point of the domain. This side of the mountain is the reason Laax is famous among snowboarders and freeskiers: several terrain parks of different levels and a large halfpipe have made it a fixture of the international freestyle scene, and the atmosphere on the slopes reflects that, young and energetic. But Laax is not only for park riders. The area offers long, wide red runs, gentle blues across the high plateau, a few steep pistes for experts, and plenty of off-piste after a snowfall, best explored with a guide. Because the area is so large, linking across to Flims and down to Falera, you can cover a lot of ground in a day.

Beginners will find practice areas near the base and on the plateau, and freestyle newcomers can start on the smaller park features before trying the bigger lines. The glacier and the high-altitude slopes help ensure reliable snow through most of the season, though wind can occasionally close the top lifts. On those days the lower slopes towards Flims and Falera, partly sheltered by forest, become the best place to ski, and the parks lower down usually stay open.

Where to stay

Laax Murschetg, at the foot of the lifts, is a modern base area with apartments and hotels designed for ski-in, ski-out convenience, along with shops, ski hire and bars. It suits families who want minimal walking and groups who want to be in the middle of the action. Laax Dorf, a little below, is the original village, with older houses, a small lake and a calmer setting, a short shuttle ride from the lifts. Falera, on its own terrace, is quieter still and appeals to those seeking peace. Each has a distinct character, so it is worth thinking about the type of stay you want before choosing accommodation.

When to go and practical tips

The season normally runs from late November or December to mid-April. Mid-winter brings the coldest snow and the best park conditions after fresh grooming, while spring offers soft snow, long days and a festive atmosphere. Weekends are busy with visitors from Zurich, so weekdays are calmer, especially outside the February school holidays. Saturday is the main changeover day. Our vehicles are equipped with winter tyres and chains for any snowfall on the climb from Chur. Declare snowboards, skis and any bulky equipment when you book so we send a vehicle with enough room.

The return journey

Allow about four and a half hours for the drive back to Geneva Airport, plus time for check-in. Afternoon and evening flights work best. Your chauffeur confirms the pick-up time in advance and adjusts it for weather or Saturday traffic if needed.
