- Border crossing: none, the route stays in Switzerland
- Best for: old-town visits, scenic rail trips, gateway to Graubünden resorts
- Getting there: motorway via Bern and Zurich, then along the Walensee
Driving from Geneva Airport to Chur
The route follows the main motorway from Geneva via Lausanne and Bern to Zurich, then heads south-east along the shores of Lake Zurich and the Walensee, where the road runs between steep cliffs and the water, before entering the Rhine valley. It is an easy drive with a beautiful final section, and traffic is mainly a factor around Bern and Zurich at peak times.
Swiss trains also connect Geneva and Chur, usually with a change in Zurich or a long through journey. For a traveller with a light bag, that works well. A car makes more sense when you are travelling with skis, children or plenty of luggage, or when your final destination is a resort above Chur rather than the city itself.
Switzerland's oldest town
Chur is often described as the oldest town in Switzerland, with traces of settlement going back thousands of years and a Roman presence on the site. Its car-free old town is a pleasant mix of narrow alleys, small squares, fountains and painted facades. Above it, the cathedral and the bishop's court form a separate quarter on a terrace, reminding visitors that Chur has been the seat of a bishopric since late antiquity. The cathedral's interior, with its Romanesque and Gothic elements and a remarkable late-Gothic altarpiece, rewards a visit.
The city also has a cantonal art museum in a striking building that combines a historic villa with a modern extension. Graubünden is Switzerland's only officially trilingual canton, where German, Romansh and Italian are spoken, and you will notice Romansh names on signs and buildings around the region.
Chur makes a good stopover rather than just a transit point. Its old town has plenty of restaurants and wine bars where you can taste dishes from across the canton, and a cable car climbs from the edge of town to the Brambrüesch area above it, with walks in summer and a view over the Rhine valley. In the evening, the lanes around the main squares are lively without being crowded.
The railway hub of Graubünden
Chur is the starting point for many journeys on the Rhaetian Railway, the narrow-gauge network that climbs into the Graubünden valleys. The Albula and Bernina lines, which together are listed by UNESCO for their engineering and landscapes, are reached from here, and Chur is a classic departure point for the Bernina Express towards Tirano in Italy. The Glacier Express between Zermatt and St. Moritz also passes through Chur. Many visitors arrive by road, spend a night in the old town and continue by train the next morning.
If you would rather keep the car, your chauffeur can continue to resorts such as Arosa or Lenzerheide, which are a short drive up the valleys, or to Flims and Laax in the Surselva, to the west.
Wine, Heidiland and practical tips
North of Chur, the Bündner Herrschaft is a small wine region along the Rhine, known especially for its Pinot Noir. Its villages, including Maienfeld, are linked to the Heidi stories, and the area markets itself as Heidiland. Local specialities include the Bündner Nusstorte, a caramel and walnut tart, air-dried meat and capuns, a dish of chard-wrapped dumplings.
- Winter weekends bring traffic towards the ski resorts; plan arrival times accordingly.
- The old town is pedestrian; drop-off is at its edge.
- Autumn is a lovely season for wine villages and walks.
- For connections to scenic trains, allow a comfortable margin after your flight.
For business travellers, Chur is the administrative centre of the canton, and many companies, hospitals and public institutions are based here. A fixed-price transfer with an invoice, or a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours), keeps a day of meetings in the region simple.
