Bellagio (Lake Como)

Bellagio is 390 km from Geneva Airport, about 4 hours 35 minutes by road, at the tip of the promontory where Lake Como splits into its two southern branches. There is no railway in the village and the last stretch of road is narrow, so a door-to-door transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is a practical way to arrive with luggage and without changes.

  • Distance from GVA: 390 km by road
  • Drive time: about 4 h 35
  • Border crossing: the route crosses into Italy
  • Best for: romantic breaks, garden visits, weddings, boat trips
  • Access: lakeside road from Como or Lecco, or car ferry from Menaggio or Varenna

How to reach Bellagio from Geneva Airport

After the alpine crossing, chosen by your chauffeur according to season and traffic, there are three ways to complete the trip. The road from Como follows the eastern shore of the western branch, a beautiful but winding route through small villages where passing larger vehicles takes patience. The road from Lecco along the other side of the promontory is a little wider in places. Finally, the car ferry from Menaggio or Varenna crosses the central lake in a few minutes, an option that can be quicker and gives a memorable arrival by water.

Travelling by train means reaching Como or Varenna and then taking a bus or ferry, with several connections to coordinate. With children or large suitcases, many visitors prefer to be driven directly, and our chauffeurs know where hotels and villas have their drop-off points on the narrow streets.

The village and its stepped lanes

Bellagio's setting is its greatest asset. Surrounded by water on three sides, the village looks out over the western and eastern branches of the lake and north towards the mountains. Its old centre climbs steeply from the lakefront in a series of stepped, cobbled lanes lined with small shops, silk boutiques, cafes and restaurants. A short climb brings you to the Romanesque Basilica of San Giacomo, and wandering upwards reveals sudden glimpses of the lake between the houses.

The lakeside promenade, with its arcaded buildings and its view of boats arriving and leaving, is the heart of village life. Towards the end of the day, when day-trippers have left, Bellagio becomes calmer, and evening walks along the water are among the most pleasant moments of a stay.

Bellagio has long had a tradition of silk and of fine craftsmanship, and small workshops still sell scarves, ties and woodwork. Dining ranges from simple lakeside trattorias serving lake fish to more formal restaurants with terraces over the water; booking ahead in summer is wise.

Gardens and villas

Bellagio is known for its historic villas and their gardens. The gardens of Villa Melzi, stretching along the shore south of the village, were laid out in the English landscape style in the early nineteenth century and are open to visitors in the main season, with azaleas, rhododendrons, old trees and statues by the water. The park on the hill above the village, belonging to another historic villa, can be visited on guided tours and offers views over both branches of the lake.

Across the water, Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo and the gardens of Varenna are a short ferry ride away. Combining several villas in one day is easy by boat, and the ferries themselves offer a relaxed way to look at the lake from its centre.

Exploring the central lake

The ferry pier is your gateway to Lake Como. Boats link Bellagio with Varenna, with its colourful houses and lakeside walkway, and with Menaggio, a lively village with a lido and hiking trails. Further afield, ferries continue north towards the upper lake or south to Como. Above Bellagio, quiet roads and paths lead to hamlets on the promontory, and the panoramic viewpoint of the Madonna del Ghisallo, a chapel dedicated to cyclists, is a pilgrimage for road-cycling enthusiasts.

  • The high season runs from spring to early autumn; many businesses close in winter.
  • Comfortable shoes are essential for the stepped lanes.
  • Summer weekends are busy; early mornings and evenings are quieter.
  • Weddings are common here, so book transfers well ahead for group events.
