From Geneva Airport to Avignon
The road heads west from Geneva into France towards Lyon, then joins the motorway that runs down the Rhône valley, one of the main north-south axes of the country. In summer, especially on Saturdays in July and August, this route is busy with holiday traffic heading to the Mediterranean, so a midweek or early-morning transfer is usually smoother. Your chauffeur will monitor traffic and can suggest a stop for lunch on the way.
By train, Geneva and Avignon are connected by services that may be direct on certain days or involve a change in Lyon, and Avignon has both a central station and a high-speed station outside the walls. The train is a good choice for a city break with light bags. A car comes into its own for families, groups, and those staying in villages of the Luberon or the Alpilles, which public transport serves poorly.
The city of the popes
In the fourteenth century, Avignon became the seat of the papacy, and the popes left behind the Palais des Papes, a massive Gothic palace that is among the largest of its kind in Europe. Visiting its vast halls, chapels and terraces gives a sense of the city's former power. Next to it, the Rocher des Doms garden overlooks the Rhône and offers views across to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Mont Ventoux in the distance.
Below the garden, the Pont Saint-Bénézet, famous from the children's song about dancing on the bridge of Avignon, stretches only part of the way across the river, its remaining arches standing in the current. The historic centre, the palace, the episcopal ensemble and the bridge are together listed by UNESCO. The old town is still enclosed by medieval ramparts, and inside them squares, churches and lanes invite long walks, with the Place de l'Horloge as the lively hub.
Festival spirit and Provençal living
Avignon is known internationally for its theatre festival, held every summer, when the city fills with performers, posters and audiences from across Europe, and both the official programme and the independent fringe occupy venues all over town. Accommodation and transport are in high demand at that time, so book early if your trip coincides. Outside the festival, the city is calmer but remains cultured, with museums of fine and modern art and a busy covered market.
The surrounding countryside offers the classic image of Provence: vineyards, olive groves, lavender fields in early summer and hilltop villages. Châteauneuf-du-Pape, whose name recalls the popes, is a short drive north and gives its name to a renowned red wine. The mistral, a strong cold wind blowing down the Rhône valley, is part of local life and can make clear days feel cooler than expected.
Day trips from Avignon
Avignon is an excellent base for exploring Provence. The Roman Pont du Gard aqueduct, Nîmes with its arena and temple, Arles with its Roman monuments and links to Van Gogh, and Orange with its Roman theatre are all within easy reach. To the east, the Luberon villages such as Gordes and Roussillon perch on hills above the plain, and the Alpilles around Saint-Rémy-de-Provence offer landscapes painted by Van Gogh. A chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) lets you combine several sites in a day.
- Spring and early autumn are mild and less crowded than midsummer.
- Inside the walls, streets are narrow; drop-off is arranged close to your accommodation.
- Summer heat is intense: plan sightseeing early or late in the day.
