  • Distance from GVA: 369 km by road
  • Drive time: about 4 h 10
  • Border crossing: the route crosses into Italy
  • Best for: city breaks, art and architecture, business in Lombardy
  • Getting there: via an alpine crossing, then the motorway past Milan

The drive from Geneva Airport

Your chauffeur will choose between the main alpine crossings depending on season and traffic: the Mont Blanc Tunnel and the Aosta Valley, or the Simplon via the Valais. Either way, the last part of the journey uses the motorway around Milan and east to Bergamo. Traffic on the Milan ring roads can be dense at peak hours, so arriving in the middle of the day or in the evening is often smoother.

By rail, the trip normally goes through Milan with at least one change, sometimes more. It is a reasonable option with light luggage, but a direct car is more comfortable after a long flight, particularly if your hotel is in the Città Alta, where access is restricted and the station is down in the lower town.

The Città Alta and its walls

Bergamo is really two cities. The Città Alta, the medieval upper town, sits on a hill enclosed by the sixteenth-century Venetian walls, which are listed by UNESCO as part of the defensive works of the Republic of Venice. A funicular links it with the lower town, and a second one continues up to San Vigilio for views across the plain and towards the Alps. Inside the walls, cobbled streets lead to Piazza Vecchia, one of the most admired squares in northern Italy, with its fountain, arcaded palace and civic tower.

Just behind it, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has a richly decorated interior, and the adjoining Colleoni Chapel, with its polychrome marble facade, is a masterpiece of the Lombard Renaissance. The walk along the walls at sunset is a local habit, with the lower town and the plain spreading out below.

The lower town, museums and food

The Città Bassa is the modern, lively part of Bergamo, with wide avenues, shops, theatres and offices. Its main art collection, the Accademia Carrara, holds important Italian paintings from the Renaissance onwards and is a key reason for art lovers to visit. The lower town is also where most business visitors stay, close to the station and to companies in the industrial area around the city.

Bergamo's cooking is hearty and rooted in the mountains: polenta in many forms, casoncelli, a filled pasta served with butter and sage, and local cheeses from the valleys. The small yellow sweets shaped like polenta with a little chocolate bird on top, sold in pastry shops of the upper town, are a playful local speciality.

Evenings in Bergamo often start with an aperitivo in the upper town, before dinner in one of the small trattorias tucked into the lanes. Down below, the lower town has a livelier, more urban rhythm, with theatres and a busy pedestrian avenue that is popular for an evening stroll.

Day trips and where to stay

Bergamo is surrounded by varied landscapes. To the east, Lake Iseo is quieter than its famous neighbours, and its car-free island, Monte Isola, is reached by boat. Between the city and the lake, the Franciacorta hills are known for sparkling wine. To the north, the Brembana and Seriana valleys lead into the Bergamo Alps, and Lake Como and Milan are both within easy reach. A chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) allows you to combine several of these in a day without parking stress.

  • Stay in the Città Alta for atmosphere, in the lower town for convenience and transport.
  • Vehicle access to the upper town is limited; tell us your hotel so we can plan the drop-off.
  • Bergamo's own airport is close by, useful if you fly out from Lombardy.
