How to get from Geneva Airport to Cuneo
The usual road route passes Chamonix and goes through the Mont Blanc Tunnel into the Aosta Valley, then follows the motorway down towards Turin and south across the plain to Cuneo. Depending on conditions, the chauffeur may choose an alternative crossing such as the Fréjus Tunnel. The alpine section is the most variable part of the journey, especially in winter, but once in Piedmont the roads are fast and the mountains of the Maritime Alps appear on the horizon as you approach the city.
Travelling by train usually means connecting through Turin, and possibly elsewhere, with several changes. That suits a slow-travel itinerary, but after a flight with luggage most visitors appreciate arriving directly at their hotel or farmhouse in the hills.
A city between two rivers
Cuneo takes its name from its wedge shape: the city sits on a high plateau where two rivers, the Stura and the Gesso, meet, and the old centre narrows to a point. Its main axis, Via Roma, is lined with long porticoes that shelter pedestrians from sun and rain, and the city as a whole has kilometres of arcaded streets. At the heart of town, Piazza Galimberti is a vast square surrounded by arcades, where a large weekly market has been held for generations.
The atmosphere is calm and genuine rather than touristic. Churches, former convents and elegant cafes line the centre, and the views from the edges of the plateau look out over the rivers towards the mountains. Cuneo is known for its rum-filled chocolates, a local speciality, and for chestnuts from the surrounding valleys, which are celebrated each autumn.
Wine hills, food and day trips
Cuneo is the capital of a province that includes some of Italy's most celebrated food and wine landscapes. To the north-east, the Langhe and Roero hills, listed by UNESCO together with Monferrato, produce Barolo, Barbaresco and other famous Piedmont wines, and the town of Alba is known worldwide for its white truffles in autumn. Villages perched on hilltops, cellars and castles make this a rewarding area to explore by car with a driver, so that everyone can taste without worrying about the road.
Closer to Cuneo, the historic towns of Saluzzo and Mondovì have well-preserved upper towns. To the south and west, the valleys of the Maritime Alps offer hiking in summer and small ski areas in winter, and the coast of Liguria is not far beyond the mountains. A chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) is useful for wine visits or a loop through several villages.
Cuneo also works as a base for travellers who come for more practical reasons: family visits, university stays or business with the region's food, engineering and agricultural companies. The city is calm, easy to navigate and well placed for meetings across southern Piedmont, and a fixed-price transfer with an invoice keeps travel administration simple.
Where to stay and when to go
In the city centre, you can walk everywhere under the arcades and enjoy the evening stroll. In the Langhe, farmhouse stays and wine estates offer a rural base with views over the vineyards. Mountain villages suit walkers and those who want cooler summer temperatures.
- Autumn is the classic season for truffles, harvests and chestnut festivals.
- Spring brings green hills and mild weather for walking.
- Many wineries receive visitors by appointment only; plan tastings ahead.
- Winter fog can settle on the plain; allow a little extra time on the road.
