The route from Geneva Airport
The chauffeur leaves Geneva on the French motorway towards Chamonix and passes through the Mont Blanc Tunnel into the Aosta Valley. The motorway then follows the Dora Baltea down to the plain, skirts Turin and continues south across Piedmont to Cuneo, a handsome town on a plateau between two rivers. From Cuneo the road follows the Vermenagna valley upstream to Limone Piemonte, which sits just below the pass leading towards France and the Mediterranean. When the Mont Blanc Tunnel is closed, the Great St Bernard Tunnel offers an alternative. The route is mostly motorway and fast main road, so the journey is long but straightforward; a short comfort stop along the way can be arranged with your driver.
The ski area: the Riserva Bianca
Limone's ski area, known as the Riserva Bianca, spreads across several valleys and ridges above the village and the hamlet of Limonetto. It offers a good mix of wide red and blue pistes, a handful of more demanding runs and areas suited to off-piste after fresh snow. The terrain is varied, from tree-lined runs that are helpful on grey days to open, sunny slopes higher up. Like other resorts in the Maritime Alps, Limone can benefit from storms coming in from the Mediterranean, bringing generous snowfalls, and the area also relies on snowmaking to secure the season. Some higher points offer views towards the Monviso, and on very clear days the sense of being close to the sea is part of the charm.
The area is a good fit for intermediate skiers who enjoy exploring, and for groups where some members are progressing while others want longer descents. Weekends bring visitors from Turin and the coast, so midweek is noticeably calmer on the lifts. Non-skiers are well catered for, with winter walking paths along the valley, snowshoe routes and cross-country trails, and the village centre itself is pleasant for a stroll, a coffee and some shopping between ski sessions.
The village
Unlike many purpose-built resorts, Limone Piemonte is a genuine old Alpine village with a long history as a stop on the trade route over the Col de Tende. Its centre has stone houses, arcades, an old parish church and narrow lanes lined with shops and cafés, and it stays lively in the evenings. Accommodation ranges from traditional hotels to apartments and holiday homes. The lifts start from the edge of the village and from Limonetto a little further up the valley. Food is a highlight: Piedmont is known for its cheeses, cured meats, risotto and hearty mountain dishes, and many visitors find the dining as memorable as the skiing.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from December to late March. January and March are often the quietest months, while Christmas, New Year and the February holidays attract many Italian families. Saturday is the normal changeover day, which affects tunnel traffic as well as the resort itself. Snow chains must be carried on Italian mountain roads in winter, and our vehicles are fully equipped. With a drive of four and a half hours, it is worth booking a flight that lands in the morning if you want to arrive before dark. Mention skis and snowboards at booking, together with any child seats you need.
Planning the return
For the return, count on about four and a half hours plus time at the airport. Afternoon and evening flights from Geneva are easiest. Your chauffeur will propose a departure time, allowing for the tunnel and for weekend traffic.
