Flumserberg

Flumserberg is about 371 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of roughly 3 hours 55 minutes via Bern, Zurich and the shore of Lake Walen, finishing with a mountain road up from Flums. The resort sits on a sunny plateau facing the jagged Churfirsten across the lake. • Distance from GVA: about 371 km
  • Drive time: around 3 h 55
  • Border crossing: none
  • Best for: intermediates, families, sledging, lake and mountain views
  • Good to know: popular with day visitors from Zurich at weekends

The route from Geneva Airport

The drive is almost entirely on motorway until the final climb. From the airport you follow Lake Geneva to Lausanne, cross the Plateau via Bern and continue to Zurich. From there the motorway runs east along the shores of Lake Zurich and then Lake Walen, one of the most attractive stretches of road in eastern Switzerland, with steep cliffs dropping straight into the water. At Flums you leave the motorway and take the winding road up to the resort villages. This last section climbs steadily through forest and is well maintained in winter, but it can be slow after fresh snowfall. There is also a gondola from Unterterzen on the lakeside, which some guests use, but arriving by road brings you straight to the door with your luggage.

The ski area

Flumserberg's pistes spread across two main ridges, Maschgenkamm and Prodkamm, linked by lifts across the sunny basin. The area is known for its wide, well-groomed intermediate runs and the panoramic views: from the higher slopes you look across Lake Walen to the Churfirsten, and on a clear day further into the eastern Alps. There are enough red runs to keep confident skiers busy for several days, a few steeper sections, and generous beginners' areas around the villages. Snowboarders appreciate the terrain park, and the long sledging run is a favourite with families. The resort does not reach the high-glacier altitudes of the Valais, so the best snow is usually in the heart of the winter.

For a week's stay, the layout of the area makes it easy to vary your days. Mornings on the higher Maschgenkamm side often give the firmest, best-prepared snow, while the sunnier slopes soften nicely around midday later in the season. Mixed groups appreciate that most lifts bring everyone back to the same central areas, so beginners and stronger skiers can split up and still meet for lunch on a terrace overlooking the lake. Non-skiers can enjoy winter walking trails, snowshoe routes and the sledging run, which make Flumserberg a sensible choice when not everyone in the party wants to ski every day.

The villages: Tannenbodenalp and Tannenheim

Flumserberg is not one village but a group of small settlements spread across the mountainside. Tannenbodenalp is the main hub, with lift stations, shops, ski hire and most of the hotels, while Tannenheim and the surrounding areas are quieter and dominated by chalets and holiday flats. The atmosphere is relaxed and practical rather than glamorous. Because the resort is within easy reach of Zurich, many visitors come for a day, which means weekends can be busy and weekdays much calmer. For a week-long stay, it is worth checking how close your accommodation is to a lift, as some chalets are spread out along the road.

When to go and practical tips

The season normally runs from December to early April, with January to early March offering the most reliable conditions. Weekdays outside the Swiss school holidays are the quietest time on the slopes. Saturday traffic can be heavy, both because of holiday changeovers and because of day visitors, so if your flight allows it, a Sunday or midweek arrival can be smoother. Winter tyres are fitted to our vehicles and chains are carried in case of heavy snow on the access road. Sunglasses and sun cream are essential: the plateau gets plenty of sunshine and the reflection off the lake and snow is strong. Let us know about skis and snowboards when you book.

The return to Geneva Airport

The drive back takes about four hours, and the busiest periods are Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings around Zurich and Bern. Your chauffeur will suggest a pick-up time that leaves a comfortable margin for check-in, and an afternoon or evening flight generally gives you a relaxed final morning.
