Getting to Flims from Geneva Airport

The journey is mostly on motorway: along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, across the Plateau via Bern, and on to Zurich. From there you follow Lake Zurich and Lake Walen east to the Rhine valley and continue south to Chur, the capital of Graubünden. Just past Chur, near Reichenau, where the two branches of the Rhine meet, the road leaves the valley and climbs to Flims through forest. The final section is short and well engineered, which makes Flims one of the more accessible Graubünden resorts. Weekend traffic around Zurich and on the approach to Chur is the main factor to keep in mind.

The ski area from the Flims side

Flims shares one large ski area with Laax and Falera, with lifts climbing from all three villages to a high plateau and up to the glacier at the Vorab. From Flims, lifts rise via Foppa and Naraus, giving access to sunny intermediate slopes and connecting to the rest of the area. The Cassons, above Flims, is known for its rugged character and freeride appeal. The ski area is famous for its terrain parks and freestyle culture, mostly concentrated on the Laax side, but from Flims you also find long, cruising red runs, wide blue slopes for families and a variety of off-piste routes for those with a guide. The size of the domain means you can ski for a week without repeating yourself.

A sensible plan is to start the day on the Flims side when the sun hits the lower slopes, head up towards the Vorab for the best snow in the late morning, and return through the wide pistes to Flims in the afternoon. Beginners have dedicated areas near the lower stations and on the plateau. Freestyle fans staying in Flims can reach the main parks on the Laax side easily on skis, so there is no need to choose between a quiet village and lively slopes. For groups with mixed abilities, the layout works well: everyone can ski at their own level and meet at one of the mountain restaurants on the plateau. On stormy days, when the upper lifts may close, the lower, tree-lined runs above Flims remain the most pleasant option.

The village: Flims Dorf and Flims Waldhaus

Flims is made up of two main parts: Flims Dorf, the older village near the main lift station, and Flims Waldhaus, set among woods a little further on, with historic hotels and a quieter feel. The area is known for its forest landscape, created long ago by one of the largest prehistoric landslides in the Alps, which also shaped the dramatic Rhine Gorge, the Ruinaulta, below. In winter, cleared paths lead through the forest to viewpoints over the gorge and to the Caumasee, a lake famous for its turquoise water in summer. Evenings are relaxed, with restaurants serving Graubünden specialities such as capuns and barley soup.

When to go and practical tips

The season typically runs from late November or December to April, with the glacier sector helping to extend it. January is cold and quiet, February is busy with school holidays, and March is ideal for sunny skiing and long lunches on terraces. Saturday is the main changeover day, so allow extra time on the motorway. Our vehicles have winter tyres and carry chains when conditions call for them. Bring sturdy boots with good grip for winter walks, and declare your skis or snowboards at booking so the vehicle has enough room.

The return journey

Count on about four and a quarter hours back to Geneva, plus check-in time. Afternoon and evening departures are the easiest. Your chauffeur confirms the pick-up time with you and keeps track of traffic and weather on the day.
