The route from Geneva Airport

From the airport, the motorway follows Lake Geneva to Lausanne, then crosses the Swiss Plateau via Bern towards Zurich. East of Zurich, the road runs along the shores of Lake Zurich and Lake Walen, one of the most scenic motorway stretches in the country, before reaching the Rhine valley near Bad Ragaz. At Landquart you leave the motorway and head up the Prättigau, a broad, wooded valley dotted with farming villages, which climbs gradually to Klosters. Because Klosters is reached before the climb to Davos, it is slightly quicker to get to than its neighbour. The road is a main route kept open all winter. Traffic around Zurich and Saturday holiday flows towards Graubünden are the factors most likely to lengthen the journey.

The ski area: Gotschna, Parsenn and Madrisa

From the centre of Klosters Platz, a cable car rises to the Gotschna, where you connect with the Parsenn, the largest ski area of the Davos region. The Parsenn is known for its long, varied descents, including runs that drop far down towards the Prättigau villages and finish with a short train ride back, an experience that gives a real sense of travelling across the mountains. The Gotschna side itself has some steep, demanding slopes that appeal to strong skiers. On the opposite side of the valley, Madrisa is reached by gondola from Klosters Dorf: it is sunny, gentle and popular with families, beginners and anyone who prefers relaxed skiing, and it also offers fine off-piste and touring opportunities with a guide.

Skiers staying in Klosters can of course explore all the other Davos mountains too, using the train or local buses, which makes it an excellent base for a week with plenty of variety while sleeping in a calmer setting. Strong skiers should not miss the off-piste and touring terrain around the Gotschna and Madrisa, always with a local guide and avalanche equipment.

The village

Klosters is divided into Klosters Platz, around the railway station and the Gotschna cable car, and Klosters Dorf, a little further down the valley near the Madrisa gondola. Wooden chalets, a historic church and quiet lanes give the village its low-key, discreet character. It has long been popular with British visitors, including members of the royal family, yet it remains understated rather than showy. Cross-country trails run along the valley floor, and winter walks and sledging runs are easy to reach. Klosters is also the starting point of the Vereina car-carrying train through the mountains to the Lower Engadine, handy for a day trip to the other side of the Alps.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from early December to April. January offers cold snow and quieter slopes, February is busy with school holidays, and March brings long sunny days, ideal for the long Parsenn descents in spring conditions. Saturday is the main changeover day. Winter tyres are standard on our vehicles and chains are carried when the forecast calls for them. Pack layers: the lower runs towards the valley can feel spring-like while the summits are cold and windy. Ski and snowboard bags, as well as any child seats, should be added to the booking so the vehicle is prepared.

The return journey

Allow around four and a half hours for the drive back to Geneva Airport, plus a margin for check-in and possible delays around Zurich. Afternoon flights are the most relaxed. Your chauffeur will contact you before the departure day to confirm the pick-up time.
