Getting to Wildhaus from Geneva Airport
From the airport, the motorway takes you along Lake Geneva, across the Swiss Plateau via Bern and on towards Zurich. Depending on traffic, the chauffeur will then either cut north-east and climb into the Toggenburg from the lowland side, through rolling hills and farming villages, or continue east and approach Wildhaus from the Rhine valley, crossing the short pass road from Gams. Both options are similar in time. Wildhaus sits at the top of the valley on a saddle between the Churfirsten and the Alpstein, so you climb gradually rather than up steep hairpins, which makes the last stretch comfortable even for passengers prone to car sickness. Traffic around Zurich is the main variable.
The ski area
The Toggenburg ski area links Wildhaus with Unterwasser and Alt St. Johann. Its highlight is the Chäserrugg, one of the Churfirsten summits, reached by lifts from Unterwasser: from the top you look down a steep drop to Lake Walen on one side and across to the Säntis on the other. The slopes are mainly blue and red, with long, flowing runs through open pastures and forest, which makes the area particularly pleasant for intermediates and families. On the Wildhaus side, the Gamserrugg slopes offer more gentle terrain with fine views. It is not a large, high-altitude resort, but it has a loyal following for its uncrowded weekdays, friendly atmosphere and scenery. Cross-country skiers will also find trails along the valley.
A good way to structure a week here is to save the Chäserrugg for clear days, when the views over the lake and towards the Alpstein are at their finest, and to explore the more sheltered forest runs lower down when cloud sits on the summits. Families with young children often base themselves on the Wildhaus side, where the gentler slopes and short lifts make it easy to take breaks. Winter walking paths, snowshoe trails and sledging runs give non-skiers plenty of options, and the wide valley views make even a simple walk between villages worthwhile.
The village and its history
Wildhaus is a traditional village of wooden houses and farmsteads spread across a sunny saddle. It is known in Swiss history as the birthplace of the Reformation leader Huldrych Zwingli, and his family house can still be seen in the village. Accommodation is mostly in small hotels, guesthouses and holiday flats, and the pace of life is unhurried. Neighbouring Unterwasser and Alt St. Johann, a little further down the valley, offer additional places to stay and give access to other parts of the ski area. The Toggenburg is also known for its music traditions and local cheese, which you will find on menus across the valley.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from December to March. Because the slopes are at moderate altitude, snow is generally most reliable from January through February, and it is worth checking the snow report before booking a late-season week. Wildhaus is popular with day visitors from eastern Switzerland at weekends, so weekdays are quieter on the lifts. As in most Alpine regions, Saturday is the main changeover day, which brings heavier traffic on the motorways. Our vehicles are fitted with winter tyres and carry chains when needed. Pack warm, windproof clothing for the higher lifts on the Chäserrugg, where the wind can be strong, and declare skis and snowboards when you book.
The return journey
Plan around four hours for the drive back to Geneva Airport, with extra time on Saturdays and Sunday evenings when traffic around Zurich and Bern is heavier. Your chauffeur confirms the pick-up time with you in advance and adjusts if the weather or the roads require it.
