The route from Geneva Airport
Menaggio can be approached from two sides. One option follows the western shore of Lake Como north from Como along the old lakeside road, a scenic but slow drive through a string of villages. The other comes via Ticino and Lugano, then crosses the Italian border and drops down through the valley from Porlezza on Lake Lugano to Menaggio. Your chauffeur decides on the day, taking into account the alpine crossing, traffic and season. Either way, the last kilometres reveal the central lake, with Bellagio on its promontory straight ahead.
For rail travellers, the trip involves a train to Como or Varenna and then a bus or ferry, with several changes and timetables to coordinate. With luggage and after a flight, a car that drops you at the door saves time and energy, especially if your accommodation is up the hillside.
The heart of the central lake
Menaggio sits at the point where the three branches of Lake Como meet, which makes it one of the most convenient bases on the lake. Its historic centre, with a lakeside square, arcades and lanes climbing towards the old castle quarter, is lively but not oversized. A lakeside promenade leads past the pier and the lido, and the views across to Bellagio and Varenna are among the defining images of Lake Como.
The ferry pier is the key to a stay here. Frequent boats, including the car ferry, link Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna in a short crossing, so you can visit all three central villages in a day. Longer services continue north towards Gravedona and Colico or south towards Tremezzo and Como.
Gardens, villas and walks
Just south of Menaggio, Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is one of the lake's most visited villas, known for its art collection and botanical gardens, which are especially colourful in spring when the azaleas and rhododendrons bloom. Across the water, Bellagio's gardens and Varenna's lakeside walkway are reachable by boat. On the hills above Menaggio, paths lead to villages and viewpoints; a long-distance trail, the Greenway, follows the shore through several villages at a gentle pace.
Menaggio is also the gateway to the Val Menaggio, which leads to Lake Lugano and the Swiss border, and to mountain areas popular with hikers and mountain bikers. There is a golf course in the hills above the village, one of the oldest on the Italian lakes, which attracts visitors from abroad. For a day of visits without timetables, a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) can take you along the shore or into Ticino.
Food in Menaggio follows the rhythm of the lake: freshwater fish such as perch, often served with risotto, alongside mountain cheeses and cured meats from the valleys behind the village. Evenings are spent on the lakeside square, watching the last boats cross towards Bellagio.
When to visit and practical tips
From April to October, the boats run frequently and the gardens are in bloom; midsummer is warm and the lake is at its busiest. In winter, many hotels and restaurants close or reduce their activity, and the atmosphere is quiet.
- The western lake road is narrow in places; journey times vary with traffic.
- The ferries are often the quickest way between central villages.
- Holiday homes on the hillside may have steep access lanes; let us know so we send the right vehicle.
- Book transfers early for summer weddings and peak weekends.
