Getting to Les Carroz from Geneva
The route crosses into France just outside Geneva and joins the A40 motorway, running south-east through the Arve valley towards Chamonix. At Cluses, you leave the motorway and take the mountain road that climbs through Arâches to Les Carroz. The road continues beyond the village to Flaine, so it is well used and regularly cleared in winter.
The climb from Cluses is a series of hairpin bends with growing views over the valley. Winter tyres or chains are required in snowy conditions, and the road can be busy on Saturdays when guests arrive for both Les Carroz and Flaine. Arriving earlier in the day or on another day of the week makes the trip smoother.
The ski area: Les Carroz and the Grand Massif
Les Carroz is linked by gondola and chairlifts to the Grand Massif, a large ski area that also includes Flaine, Samoëns, Morillon and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. From the village, lifts rise through the forest to the Tête des Saix area, where routes lead over to Flaine's high, open bowl and towards Samoëns and Morillon on the other side.
Les Carroz's own slopes are largely tree-lined and gentle to intermediate, which makes them pleasant in poor visibility and well suited to families and less confident skiers. When the sun is out, many visitors head over to Flaine for wider, higher slopes with more reliable snow. Advanced skiers can explore the steeper parts of Flaine and off-piste terrain in the area with a guide.
The long descent from the top of the Grand Massif down towards Sixt is one of the most scenic runs in the area, passing through a wild, wooded landscape when conditions allow. Because the lower slopes around Les Carroz sit among the trees, they also hold up well on stormy days, when the open terrain of Flaine can be windy and flat-lit. Many regular visitors plan their week around this: Flaine on bright days, the forest runs above the village when the weather closes in.
The village and where to stay
Les Carroz grew from a farming village into a ski resort without losing its character. The centre has shops, restaurants, cafés and a weekly market, and the village is lively all year round rather than only in winter. Chalets and apartment buildings spread across the sunny slope, many with views over the Arve valley.
Choosing accommodation close to the main gondola saves time each morning, while chalets further from the centre offer more space and quiet, with resort shuttle buses connecting to the lifts. The village is a good alternative to staying in Flaine itself, combining access to the same ski area with a more traditional atmosphere and more choice for evenings out.
Non-skiers will find winter walks, snowshoeing and sledging, and the nearby town of Samoëns or the wider Arve valley offers more to explore. Annecy and Geneva are both within reach for a day out, and a chauffeur by the hour, with a two-hour minimum, makes it easy to plan such an excursion without worrying about parking or mountain driving.
When to go and practical tips
The season runs from mid-December to April. January and early March are often quieter, while February is busy with school holidays. Snow is generally most reliable on the higher slopes towards Flaine.
- Saturday traffic: the road from Cluses carries traffic for both Les Carroz and Flaine on changeover days.
- Winter equipment: chains or winter tyres are mandatory in snow on French mountain roads.
- Skis and luggage: list skis, snowboards and extra bags when booking.
- Return trip: allow around two hours before your flight from Geneva, more on busy weekends.
