Les Rousses
Les Rousses is about 46 km from Geneva Airport, and the drive takes around 45 minutes, typically via Nyon and Saint-Cergue on the Swiss side before crossing into France at La Cure. The resort spreads across a high Jura plateau and four villages, with alpine slopes, extensive cross-country trails and a frozen lake in mid-winter. How to get to Les Rousses from Geneva
The most common route leaves the airport on the A1 motorway towards Lausanne and exits at Nyon, on the shore of Lake Geneva. From Nyon, the road climbs into the Jura through Saint-Cergue and the Col de la Givrine, a high pass with open pastures and pine forest, before crossing the border at La Cure and arriving in Les Rousses a few minutes later. An alternative route via Gex and the Col de la Faucille is also possible, depending on conditions.
The climb from Nyon gives good views back over the lake and the Alps. The road is a mountain route, cleared in winter, but snow can still make it slower, so winter tyres or chains are needed in the cold season.
The ski area: alpine and Nordic
Les Rousses combines downhill and cross-country skiing in a way that few Alpine resorts can match. The alpine slopes are grouped into several sectors, including Le Noirmont, Les Jouvencelles, La Serra and the slopes linked across the border with La Dôle in Switzerland. The pistes are mainly gentle and intermediate, suited to beginners and families, with a few steeper runs for more confident skiers. On clear days the views from the top extend over Lake Geneva to Mont Blanc.
Cross-country skiing is a real strength. A large network of Nordic trails crosses the plateau and forest around the four villages, and the Jura is one of France's most respected areas for this discipline. Snowshoeing, dog-sledding outings and winter walks add variety, and the region attracts many visitors who prefer the calm of the Jura to the busy high-Alpine resorts.
Because the area sits lower than the Alps, snow conditions vary from year to year. In a good winter, though, the snow on the plateau can be deep and long-lasting, and the short drive lets you pick your moment. Snowmaking covers parts of the alpine slopes, while the Nordic trails depend more on natural snowfall.
The villages and what to see
Les Rousses is the main village, with shops, restaurants and accommodation around the town centre. Prémanon, Lamoura and Bois-d'Amont each have their own character: Prémanon is home to a national Nordic training centre, Lamoura sits close to the slopes and Bois-d'Amont lies in the valley near the Swiss border, known for its woodworking heritage.
The Fort des Rousses, a large nineteenth-century fortress, houses cellars where Comté cheese is aged, and the Lac des Rousses freezes in cold winters, creating a striking landscape. Local food centres on Comté, Morbier, Mont d'Or in season and smoked Jura sausages, which make hearty dinners after a day on the trails. Visitors staying in Geneva often come up for a single day, while families tend to rent a chalet or apartment for a week, using the resort shuttle buses or a car to move between the villages and ski sectors. The calm atmosphere and the mix of activities make it easy to please groups where not everyone skis downhill.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from mid-December to March. January and February usually offer the most reliable snow on both the alpine and Nordic trails, while March brings sunnier days.
