The route to Lélex
The drive begins by crossing the French border close to the airport and heading through the Pays de Gex towards Gex. The road then climbs the eastern face of the Jura to the Col de la Faucille, where the view over Lake Geneva and the Alps opens up behind you. Beyond the pass, the road drops into the Valserine valley, passes through Mijoux and continues south along the river to Lélex.
The Valserine is a long, green valley between Jura ridges, and in winter its pastures turn into a broad white landscape. The road is a mountain route rather than a motorway, and conditions at the Col de la Faucille can be snowy, so allow a few extra minutes in bad weather. Depending on conditions, chauffeurs sometimes take the longer approach via Bellegarde, which avoids the pass.
Skiing at Lélex and Crozet
From Lélex, a gondola rises to the plateau of Catray, where the Lélex side meets slopes coming up from Crozet in the Pays de Gex. Together they form the Lélex-Crozet sector of the Monts Jura ski area, with a range of mostly easy and intermediate runs. The upper slopes look out across the Valserine on one side and towards Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc on the other.
The skiing is relaxed and suits children, beginners and those returning to skiing after a break. More confident skiers will find a handful of steeper runs, but the area is not designed for experts seeking long, demanding descents. Its strength is the calm atmosphere and the short distance from Geneva. Queues are rarely an issue outside the French school holidays, and parents can keep an eye on children across a compact network of lifts and runs. On days when the upper lifts are closed by wind, the lower slopes and the Nordic trails in the valley usually remain an option.
Nordic skiing is a major part of winter life in the Valserine. Trails follow the valley floor and wind through the forest, and the Jura is known throughout France for cross-country skiing. Snowshoe routes, sledging areas and winter walking paths make it easy to fill a day without downhill skiing.
The village and staying in Lélex
Lélex is a small village with traditional farm buildings, holiday chalets and a few shops and restaurants. It sits in the Haut-Jura regional nature park and has a peaceful, unhurried character. Accommodation is mainly in self-catering chalets and apartments, which suits families who want space and a kitchen. Shopping for supplies is easiest on the way in, and a chauffeur can stop briefly at a supermarket in the Pays de Gex if you ask in advance, so you arrive with everything needed for the first evening.
Compared with Mijoux further up the valley, Lélex feels even more tucked away, and the gondola gives it direct access to the slopes. Evenings are quiet, often spent around a fondue or a plate of local Comté and Morbier cheese, and the night sky over the valley is clear and dark.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from mid-December to March, with the most reliable snow in January and February. Because the Jura is lower than the Alps, conditions vary from year to year, and the proximity to Geneva lets you book when the snow is good.
- Arrival timing: the Col de la Faucille is easier in daylight, especially after fresh snow.
- Winter equipment: chains or winter tyres are required on Jura mountain roads in winter.
- Family luggage: sledges, cross-country skis and children's equipment should be mentioned when booking.
- Return trip: allow about an hour and a half before your flight, more if snow is forecast.
