Getting to Mijoux from Geneva Airport

Geneva Airport sits right next to the French border, and the route to Mijoux crosses into France almost immediately, passing Ferney-Voltaire and heading north-west through the Pays de Gex towards the town of Gex. From Gex, the road climbs steadily up the side of the Jura through forest and bends to the Col de la Faucille. The views back over Geneva, the lake and, on a clear day, the Mont Blanc massif are memorable.

From the pass, the road descends a short distance into the Valserine valley to Mijoux, a small village at around 1,000 metres. The climb to La Faucille is a mountain road and can be snowy, so winter tyres or chains are required in the cold season. Professional chauffeurs know the road well and adjust timing in heavy snow.

The ski area: Monts Jura

The Monts Jura area brings together the slopes above Mijoux and La Faucille with the Lélex-Crozet sector further along the valley. The skiing above Mijoux and La Faucille is gentle and compact, with beginner zones, easy blue runs and a few more challenging slopes towards Mont Rond, where the summit views over Lake Geneva and the Alps are a highlight.

The area is not about long, steep descents. It suits young children, beginners and relaxed intermediates who want uncrowded slopes close to Geneva. Snow depends on the season, as the Jura sits lower than the Alps, but in good winters the cover can be excellent, and quick access means you can choose your days based on the forecast.

The Jura is particularly well known for cross-country skiing. Around La Faucille and the La Vattay plateau, long networks of trails cross open pasture and forest, suitable for both classic and skating styles. Snowshoeing and winter walking are also popular, and the quiet landscape is very different from the busy resorts of the high Alps.

Village life and where to stay

Mijoux is a small mountain village rather than a purpose-built resort, with a church, a few shops and restaurants and holiday chalets around it. It sits in the Haut-Jura regional nature park, and the atmosphere is calm and rural. Many guests rent self-catering chalets or apartments, and La Faucille at the top of the pass offers accommodation directly by the slopes.

The local food reflects the Jura: Comté cheese, Morbier, smoked sausages and mountain dishes such as fondue and raclette. A short stay here feels very different from a city break in Geneva, even though the airport is less than an hour away. For visitors combining business in Geneva with a few days of fresh air, Mijoux is a practical option: you can spend the morning in a meeting by the lake and be on a cross-country trail by mid-afternoon. It also works well as a gentle introduction to skiing for children before a bigger Alpine trip later in the season.

When to go and practical tips

The season typically runs from mid-December to March, depending on snowfall. January and February usually offer the most reliable conditions. Because the area is so close, it is easy to plan a visit at short notice when a good snowfall is forecast.

  • Short breaks: the 45-minute drive makes weekend trips and late arrivals practical.
  • Winter equipment: the Col de la Faucille road requires winter tyres or chains in snowy conditions.
  • Day trips: a chauffeur by the hour can take you up for a day and back to Geneva in the evening.
  • Return trip: about an hour and a half before your flight is usually enough.
