Getting to Grindelwald from Geneva
From Geneva Airport, the route follows the A1 motorway to Lausanne and then heads north-east through Fribourg to Bern, the Swiss capital. From Bern the motorway follows the Aare valley to Thun and runs along the shore of Lake Thun to Interlaken, set between two lakes. Here you leave the main road and turn south into the Lütschine valley, following the road to Grindelwald, which sits just over 1,000 metres above sea level.
The journey crosses from French-speaking to German-speaking Switzerland, and the views change from lakes and farmland to the dramatic peaks of the Bernese Oberland. As you approach, the north face of the Eiger towers directly above the village, one of the most recognisable mountain walls in the Alps.
The Jungfrau ski region
Grindelwald is part of the Jungfrau ski region, which includes three main areas. First, reached by gondola from the village, offers sunny, open slopes and wide views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen, on the other side of the valley, connect with Wengen and form the largest area, with many long, scenic intermediate runs. Mürren and the Schilthorn, above the neighbouring Lauterbrunnen valley, offer a higher and steeper area reached by train and cable car.
The Eiger Express gondola links the Grindelwald Terminal with the Eigergletscher station, saving a lot of time getting into the Kleine Scheidegg area. From Kleine Scheidegg, the cogwheel railway continues up to the Jungfraujoch, a high-altitude viewpoint that is popular with non-skiers too.
The terrain suits intermediates best, with long cruising runs and memorable views. Experts can find challenges, including the famous Lauberhorn downhill course above Wengen, while beginners have gentle areas at Bodmi and on the Männlichen side. Grindelwald is also well known for its sledging runs, which make it a popular choice for families and groups.
The village and staying in Grindelwald
Grindelwald is a busy Alpine village with traditional wooden chalets, hotels and shops strung along a main road. It is a year-round destination, with many visitors coming for the views and railways as well as the skiing. The atmosphere is international but relaxed, and the village is a practical base for exploring the wider Jungfrau region.
Choosing where to stay depends on which area you want to ski. Accommodation near the First gondola suits those focused on that side, while staying near the Grindelwald Terminal or the railway station makes it easy to reach Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen. Some chalets sit on steep side roads above the village, so share the full address when booking. Non-skiers in the group can still enjoy the mountains through winter walking paths, the railways and the many viewpoints, which makes Grindelwald one of the easier resorts for mixed parties.
When to go and practical tips
The ski season usually runs from mid-December to early April. January is often clear and quieter, February and Easter are busier, and spring brings longer days and softer snow on the lower slopes.
- Traffic: motorway traffic around Bern and Thun can slow at peak times; weekday travel is usually smoother.
- Winter equipment: the road from Interlaken is well maintained, but side roads may require chains after heavy snow.
- Skis and luggage: list skis and extra bags at booking.
- Return trip: allow about four and a half hours before your flight from Geneva.
