Geneva Airport to Les Rousses: train, bus or private transfer?

Les Rousses sits just over the border in the French Jura. Here is how the Nyon mountain railway compares with a direct car from GVA.

GVA → Les RoussesSki resort · France

Les Rousses

Les Rousses is about 46 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 45 minutes by road via Nyon and the Col de la Givrine. Public transport is possible using the narrow-gauge line from Nyon to La Cure on the border, but it means several steps and a final local connection; with ski gear or a family, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the more straightforward choice.

  • Distance from GVA: about 46 km
  • Drive time: around 45 minutes
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France at La Cure
  • Train option: partial, via Nyon and the mountain line to La Cure
  • Best for: Nordic skiing, family ski holidays, lake and forest walks

Les Rousses: a Jura plateau resort

Les Rousses is a high plateau village in the French Jura, surrounded by spruce forest, open pastures and a lake of the same name. The Station des Rousses brings together several villages and is known above all for cross-country skiing, with long tracks across rolling terrain, while the downhill area is shared with the Swiss side around La Dôle. The old fort above the village is famous for maturing Comté cheese. It is a relaxed, family-orientated place, quite different in mood from the high Alpine resorts.

Summer brings a different crowd: walkers, cyclists and families who come for the lake, the forest trails and the cooler air of the plateau. Whatever the season, many visitors stay not in Les Rousses itself but in one of the neighbouring villages such as Prémanon, Lamoura or Bois-d'Amont, which matters when you work out how to cover the last few kilometres from a station.

The public transport route, step by step

The rail approach starts with a train from Geneva Airport along the lake to Nyon. From Nyon, a narrow-gauge mountain railway climbs through Saint-Cergue to La Cure, right on the Franco-Swiss border. From La Cure you still need to reach your accommodation in Les Rousses or one of the neighbouring villages, which may mean a local bus, a taxi or a walk depending on season and where you are staying.

The mountain line itself is a pleasant ride, and in good weather it is a nice way to arrive. But it adds up to at least two trains plus a last leg, each with its own timing. With skis, a pushchair or several suitcases, that sequence becomes hard work, and a late incoming flight can leave you short of connections in the evening.

By car: one continuous journey

A private car follows a direct line: up the motorway towards Lausanne, off at Nyon, then the road through Saint-Cergue over the Col de la Givrine and across the border at La Cure, down into Les Rousses. In winter this is a proper mountain road, and the vehicle carries suitable winter equipment. Your chauffeur drops you at your chalet, apartment or hotel door, which is a real advantage when the snow is deep and the light has gone.

Ski families and groups usually choose the Mercedes V-Class van, which takes up to seven passengers with skis and luggage. Couples with modest bags are comfortable in a Business Sedan. For a larger group, such as a club trip or a school party, a Mercedes Sprinter minibus can be arranged.

Timing is another advantage. The plateau can be reached in well under an hour, so a morning arrival at Geneva Airport still leaves most of the day for the tracks or the slopes. Chauffeurs keep an eye on conditions over the Givrine and allow for snowfall, rather than sticking rigidly to a fair-weather estimate.

Weighing up train against car

The train is a fair option if:

  • you travel light and have time to enjoy the journey;
  • you land in the morning or early afternoon;
  • your accommodation is close to where the connection drops you.

A car makes more sense if you carry ski equipment, travel with children who need child seats, are a group splitting one fixed price per vehicle, or arrive late in the evening. The return trip deserves the same thought: an early departure from Les Rousses to catch a morning flight is far easier with a car booked for a set time.

Weekends during the French school holidays are the busiest periods on the plateau. Arrivals and departures concentrate on the same days, so pre-booking your transfer is wise, especially for a group or a van with skis.
