Flaine
Flaine is about 70 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 70 minutes by road via the A40 to Cluses and the mountain road up through Les Carroz. There is no train to the resort: public transport means the Léman Express to Cluses and a bus up the mountain, or a seasonal ski coach; for families and groups with ski equipment, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch goes straight to the resort.

Flaine: a high, purpose-built resort
Flaine is a ski resort created in the 1960s in a high bowl above the Arve valley, designed with the involvement of the architect Marcel Breuer in a modernist, Bauhaus-inspired style. Its concrete buildings, set into the landscape, and the works of art displayed around the resort, including pieces by Picasso and Dubuffet, make it unusual among Alpine resorts. It is largely pedestrian, with accommodation close to the slopes, and it is the highest point of the Grand Massif ski area, linked with Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt. Its altitude and north-facing slopes give it a reputation for reliable snow.
Because the resort is largely car-free and built for skiing, most guests come for a week of skiing rather than for touring, and they arrive with a full set of equipment.
Public transport: train to Cluses, bus up the mountain
From Geneva Airport, take a train to Geneva Cornavin and change for the Léman Express up the Arve valley to Cluses. From Cluses, buses climb the road to Les Carroz and Flaine, with services concentrated in the ski season. In winter, shared coaches also run from Geneva Airport to the Grand Massif resorts, usually on Saturdays and other main changeover days.
These options are economical for a solo traveller, but with family luggage and skis they mean three separate legs and waiting in between. The mountain road is long and winding, buses can be crowded on Saturdays, and a delayed flight may make you miss the last useful connection. With young children, it can turn the arrival day into an ordeal.
Private transfer: door to door in about 70 minutes
By car, the route leaves the airport, crosses the border into France and follows the A40 towards Chamonix to Cluses. From there, the road climbs through Arâches and Les Carroz to the top of the pass and down into the Flaine bowl. Your chauffeur drops you as close as possible to your residence; because the resort centre is largely pedestrian, you will be set down at the nearest access point or car park, where resort arrangements take over for the last few metres.
The Mercedes V-Class van is the most common choice for families and groups, with space for up to seven passengers, ten bags and skis. Couples with lighter luggage can choose a Business Sedan, and larger ski clubs or groups of friends travel in a Mercedes Sprinter minibus. Child seats are available on request.
Saturday traffic and snow on the climb
Flaine and the other Grand Massif resorts change over mostly on Saturdays, and the A40 around Cluses and the road up to Les Carroz and Flaine can be very busy at those times. The climb is also exposed to snow, and in heavy weather it takes longer. Transfer vehicles carry winter equipment, and chauffeurs plan departure times taking the conditions into account. If you can arrive on another day, the journey is usually much quieter.
A few planning tips:
- declare skis, snowboards and any bulky items at booking;
- check how your residence handles arrivals and luggage in the pedestrian centre;
- book the return transfer in advance, allowing a generous margin on Saturday mornings;
- keep warm clothes accessible, as the resort is high and arrivals in the evening can be cold.
Which option suits you?
The train-and-bus combination or a shared coach can work for a solo skier on a budget. For families, groups and anyone with full ski equipment or awkward flight times, a private transfer avoids the changes and gets the holiday started sooner. Shared among several people, the fixed price per vehicle is often closer to coach prices than expected.
Booking your transfer to Flaine
Booking online with AirportsTransfers.ch gives you a fixed price for the vehicle before you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
