Getting to Flaine from Geneva Airport

The route crosses into France just outside Geneva and joins the A40 motorway, heading south-east through the Arve valley. At Cluses, you leave the motorway and take the mountain road that climbs in hairpins to Arâches and Les Carroz. Beyond Les Carroz, the road continues higher through the forest and over open slopes before dropping down into the Flaine bowl, where it ends.

The last section above Les Carroz is exposed and can be snowy, so winter tyres or chains are essential in the cold season. On Saturdays, traffic for Flaine and Les Carroz shares the same road, and an early arrival can save time. Because the resort centre is largely car-free, your chauffeur will drop you at the closest access point to your accommodation.

The ski area: a snow-sure bowl in the Grand Massif

Flaine's own slopes form a large bowl facing mostly north, which helps keep the snow in good condition through the season. From the resort, lifts rise to the Grandes Platières, the high point of the area, where the views towards Mont Blanc are spectacular. The terrain in the bowl is wide and open, with a good mix of blue, red and black runs, and plenty of space for beginners close to the resort.

From Flaine, lifts and pistes connect with Les Carroz, Samoëns, Morillon and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, forming the Grand Massif. Strong skiers can explore off-piste terrain around the bowl and the Désert de Platé, a vast limestone plateau with an otherworldly landscape, ideally with a mountain guide. The long, scenic descent towards Sixt is a highlight when snow allows.

The high, open terrain can be exposed to wind, and the top lifts may close in stormy weather. On such days, the tree-lined runs above Les Carroz and Samoëns are a good alternative. Because the resort sits at the end of the road and is mostly car-free, there is little through-traffic, and the evenings are calm. Groceries and ski hire are available within the resort, so once you have arrived there is little reason to leave unless you want a change of scene.

The resort: Bauhaus design and car-free streets

Flaine was built from scratch in the 1960s, designed by the Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer. The concrete buildings, which follow the contours of the bowl, give the resort a distinctive modernist look that sets it apart from traditional Alpine villages. Outdoor sculptures by artists including Picasso and Dubuffet add to its character, and the resort's architecture is now recognised as part of France's twentieth-century heritage.

The resort is divided into several areas, including Flaine Forum, Flaine Forêt and the more chalet-style Hameau de Flaine. Most accommodation is close to the slopes, and many properties offer ski-in, ski-out access, which is a major advantage for families with young children. The car-free centre makes walking around safe and calm.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from mid-December to late April. Thanks to its north-facing bowl, Flaine often keeps good snow later into spring than lower resorts nearby. February is busy with school holidays, while January and March are often quieter.

  • Saturday traffic: the road from Cluses is shared with Les Carroz; travel earlier on changeover days.
  • Winter equipment: chains or winter tyres are mandatory on the climb to Flaine in snowy conditions.
  • Arrival point: give your accommodation name when booking so the drop-off is as close as possible.
  • Return trip: allow around two hours before your flight, more on Saturdays or in heavy snow.
