The route from Geneva to Saint-Gervais
Leaving the airport, the route crosses into France and joins the A40 motorway heading south-east through the Arve valley, past Bonneville, Cluses and Sallanches. The motorway ends near Le Fayet, the lower part of Saint-Gervais, where the thermal baths and the railway station are located. From Le Fayet, a short climb brings you to the town centre of Saint-Gervais, perched above the gorge of the Bon Nant river.
It is one of the most straightforward ski transfers from Geneva, almost entirely on motorway. Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, a quieter village in the same commune, is reached by a further winding road with lovely views of the Mont Blanc massif. Winter tyres or chains are required on these roads in snowy conditions.
The ski area: Evasion Mont-Blanc
From the centre of Saint-Gervais, a gondola rises to Le Bettex, a hamlet on the mountainside, and lifts continue up towards Mont d'Arbois, where the slopes connect with Megève. Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce offers another entry point into the same network. Together they form part of the Evasion Mont-Blanc area, with many wide intermediate runs and tree-lined pistes that are pleasant in all weather.
The views are a major draw: from the upper slopes, the Mont Blanc massif rises directly ahead, and on clear days the panorama is outstanding. The terrain suits families and intermediate skiers well, with some steeper runs and off-piste options for more confident skiers, who should explore with a local guide.
Saint-Gervais is also the starting point of the Tramway du Mont-Blanc, a historic rack railway, which climbs from Le Fayet and Saint-Gervais into the mountains. In winter it gives access to the Col de Voza and the slopes connected with Les Houches, adding another dimension to a ski week, and it is a memorable outing for non-skiers.
The town, the spa and where to stay
Saint-Gervais is a real town with a long history as a spa resort. The thermal baths at Le Fayet are known for their spring waters, and an afternoon at the spa is a popular way to unwind after skiing. The upper town has a church, a lively square and a range of shops, cafés and restaurants that stay open all year.
Accommodation is spread between the town centre, Le Bettex, which offers direct access to the slopes, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, with a quieter village feel. Staying in town gives easy access to the gondola and to evenings out; Le Bettex suits those who want to ski from the door. Le Fayet's railway station also connects to Chamonix by train, making a day in the Chamonix valley easy to arrange. Families often appreciate that Saint-Gervais functions as a town all year, with a pharmacy, supermarkets and everyday services close at hand, which takes some of the pressure off a week in the mountains with children.
