Geneva Airport to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains: train, bus or private transfer?

The Léman Express runs all the way to Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet, but the village sits above the station. An honest comparison of train and car from GVA.

GVA → Saint-Gervais-les-BainsSki resort · France

Saint-Gervais-les-Bains

Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is about 70 km from Geneva Airport, a little over an hour by car via the A40 motorway. The Léman Express runs from Geneva Cornavin to the station at Le Fayet, at the foot of the resort, so the train is a real option; but the village and its ski lifts are higher up, and for skiers, families and late arrivals a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is usually more practical.

  • Distance from GVA: about 70 km
  • Drive time: around 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
  • Train option: yes, change at Geneva Cornavin for the Léman Express to Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet
  • Best for: skiing in the Evasion Mont-Blanc area, thermal spa stays, summer mountaineering

Saint-Gervais: spa town and ski resort

Saint-Gervais-les-Bains combines a thermal spa tradition with direct access to the slopes and high mountains of the Mont Blanc massif. The spa is located in the lower part, at Le Fayet, while the village centre sits on a terrace above, with its church, shops and views of the Mont Blanc range. The ski area is part of Evasion Mont-Blanc, linked with Megève, offering a wide variety of pistes. Saint-Gervais is also the starting point of the Tramway du Mont-Blanc, a historic rack railway climbing towards the Nid d'Aigle, a classic route for summer walkers and climbers.

This split between Le Fayet and the upper village, and the scattering of chalets and residences on the slopes, is important when you consider how to arrive.

Visitors include skiers on a week's holiday, spa guests booked for several days of treatments, mountaineers heading for the high routes in summer, and families who like the resort's mix of village life and access to the slopes. Some stay in Le Fayet near the spa and the station, others high up near the lifts, and the right way to travel from the airport depends a lot on which of these you are.

The train: direct to Le Fayet after one change

From Geneva Airport, you take a train to Geneva Cornavin and change onto the Léman Express line that runs through Annemasse and up the Arve valley to its terminus at Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet. It is a straightforward, comfortable journey with only one change, and it avoids road traffic on busy days. From Le Fayet, the Mont-Blanc Express continues towards Chamonix.

The limitation is the last part. Le Fayet station is in the valley, while the village of Saint-Gervais and its lifts are a few kilometres above by road. You will need a local bus, a taxi or a lift to finish the journey, which adds a fourth stage with luggage. That is fine with a small suitcase on a sunny afternoon, less so with skis, children and boots in the dark.

Coaches and buses

In winter, shared coaches link Geneva Airport with the main resorts of the Mont Blanc country, including Saint-Gervais, with stops at set points. Local buses connect Le Fayet with the village and the surrounding area. They are economical for individuals, but timings depend on the operator's schedule rather than your flight.

Private transfer: straight to the village or chalet

By car, the route crosses the border into France, follows the A40 towards Chamonix, and leaves the motorway at Le Fayet for the climb up to Saint-Gervais. Your chauffeur drops you at your hotel, residence or chalet, whether in the village centre, near the lifts or on the road towards Le Bettex. The journey is continuous, with no changes and no last-mile problem.

When the private car makes most sense:

  • skiing families with child seats and equipment;
  • groups of friends sharing a Mercedes V-Class van or Sprinter minibus;
  • thermal spa guests with luggage for a longer stay;
  • flights landing late or leaving early, outside the comfortable train hours.

Saturday traffic in the Mont Blanc valley

The upper Arve valley is one of the busiest routes into the Alps on winter Saturdays, with traffic to Saint-Gervais, Megève, Chamonix and the surrounding resorts. The A40 near Sallanches and Le Fayet can be very slow at peak hours. The train avoids road congestion, which is a genuine advantage on those days, though it does not solve the climb from Le Fayet to the village. A chauffeur will plan departure times around traffic, and arriving on a Sunday or midweek is noticeably calmer.

A fair way to decide: if you are staying near Le Fayet, travelling light and landing in daytime, the train is simple and competitive. If you are staying in the upper village or on the slopes, carrying ski equipment, travelling with children, or landing late, the private car removes the last-mile problem and saves energy at the start of your holiday. For the return, an early pick-up from the chalet door is far easier than coordinating a bus down to the station before the first train.
