Geneva Airport to La Clusaz: train, bus or private transfer?

La Clusaz is about an hour from GVA by road, but there is no train to the resort. Here is how coaches, train-plus-bus and a private car compare.

GVA → La ClusazSki resort · France

La Clusaz

La Clusaz is about 60 km from Geneva Airport, roughly an hour by road via Annecy and Thônes or via La Roche-sur-Foron. No railway reaches the resort, so public transport means a seasonal coach or a train to Annecy followed by a bus; for skiers with equipment and families, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the most direct option.

  • Distance from GVA: about 60 km
  • Drive time: around 1 hour
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
  • Train option: not to the resort; nearest major station is Annecy
  • Best for: ski weeks in the Aravis, summer hiking, short ski breaks from Geneva

La Clusaz: an authentic Aravis village

La Clusaz is a traditional Savoyard village in the Aravis range, with a church at its centre, wooden chalets and pastures that become ski slopes in winter. It is one of the larger resorts close to Geneva, with a varied ski area spread over several mountains, suited to all levels from beginners to experienced skiers looking for off-piste. The valley is also the home of Reblochon cheese, and in summer the resort becomes a base for walking, mountain biking and lake swimming. Because it is so close to Geneva, many visitors come for long weekends as well as full weeks.

Next door, the Col des Aravis leads towards the Val d'Arly, and nearby villages such as Le Grand-Bornand, Saint-Jean-de-Sixt and Manigod share the same relaxed Aravis character. Many people stay in one of these neighbouring villages rather than in the centre of La Clusaz, which is worth keeping in mind when planning the last stretch of the journey.

Public transport: coach or train plus bus

In the winter season, shared coaches and shuttle services link Geneva Airport with the Aravis resorts, usually on fixed schedules concentrated on weekends. They are a budget-friendly choice for travellers on popular arrival days, but departure times may not match your flight, and stops in several villages lengthen the journey.

The rail alternative is to take a train from the airport to Geneva Cornavin, then the Léman Express or a regional train to Annecy, and from Annecy a bus up through Thônes to La Clusaz. It works, but it adds up to three legs, each with its own waiting time, and carrying skis and boots through two stations is tiring. Outside peak periods bus frequency is lower, and a late flight can leave you stuck in Annecy for the night.

Private transfer: one hour, door to door

By car, the trip is short. Your chauffeur leaves Geneva Airport, crosses the border into France and takes the motorway towards Annecy, then the valley road through Thônes and up to La Clusaz. Depending on traffic, the route via La Roche-sur-Foron and the Borne valley can also be used. You are dropped at the door of your chalet or residence, which matters in a village where much of the accommodation is scattered on the hillsides.

The vehicle is chosen for your group and luggage: a Business Sedan for a couple with modest bags, a Mercedes V-Class van for up to seven passengers with skis and ten bags, or a Sprinter minibus for larger ski clubs and groups of friends. Winter equipment is carried, and child seats are available on request.

Saturday traffic and winter driving

As in all Alpine resorts, Saturdays in the ski season concentrate arrivals and departures, and the roads around Annecy and up the valley can be congested at peak times. If your dates are flexible, a Sunday or midweek arrival is often smoother. When it has snowed, the final climb to the resort needs winter driving skills, which is another reason many visitors prefer not to hire a car and drive themselves on unfamiliar mountain roads after a flight.

Snow chains or winter tyres are part of the equipment on transfer vehicles, and chauffeurs who drive the Aravis road regularly know where conditions tend to change. For the return, plan to leave the resort with a comfortable margin, especially on a Saturday morning, when traffic down the valley towards Annecy and Geneva builds up.

Which option is right for you?

  • Solo traveller, light luggage, flexible timing: coach or train plus bus can work, especially on main arrival days.
  • Family with children: door-to-door transfer with child seats avoids changes and waits.
  • Group of friends: one fixed price per vehicle, shared, often compares well with individual coach tickets.
  • Late arrival or early departure: a pre-booked car is the reliable option.
