  • Ski area: five massifs: L'Étale, Beauregard, L'Aiguille, Balme and Manigod
  • Best for: village atmosphere, varied terrain, freeride and families

Getting to La Clusaz from Geneva Airport

From the airport, the route crosses into France and joins the motorway heading south through Haute-Savoie. Depending on traffic, chauffeurs either continue towards Annecy and turn east up the valley through Thônes, or leave the motorway earlier and follow the Borne valley through Saint-Jean-de-Sixt. Both routes end with a pleasant climb through farmland and forest to the village, which sits at just over 1,000 metres.

The roads are main routes that are well maintained in winter, though fresh snow can slow the final section. The short journey is a strong advantage for families with young children and for visitors arriving on late flights who would rather not face a long mountain drive in the dark.

The ski area: five massifs around one village

La Clusaz's slopes are spread around the village across five distinct massifs, linked by lifts and pistes. Beauregard, reached by cable car, has gentle, tree-lined runs and a sunny plateau that suits beginners and families. L'Étale and L'Aiguille, on the opposite side, offer more varied terrain with longer, steeper runs. Manigod, over the ridge, adds a quieter, wooded sector with sweeping views towards Mont Blanc.

The Balme massif, the highest part of the area, is the most dramatic, with open bowls, steep slopes and a strong reputation for freeride. The resort is closely associated with French freeskiing, and many local skiers have gone on to compete internationally. Off-piste in Balme should be approached with a qualified guide, as the terrain is serious and conditions change quickly.

Cross-country skiers can head to the Plateau des Confins, a peaceful area with trails through open meadows and forest near a small mountain lake. Snowshoeing and winter walking are also popular, and the trails are a calm alternative on days when the upper slopes are busy.

The village and Aravis traditions

La Clusaz has kept the feel of a mountain village, with a church at its centre, a stream running through it and chalets and farm buildings spreading up the slopes. Shops, cafés and restaurants are clustered around the centre, and the village is lively without being overwhelming.

The Aravis is the home of Reblochon, a soft cheese made from the milk of cows that graze these mountains. It is the key ingredient of tartiflette, the potato, onion and bacon dish found on almost every menu. Several farms in the area produce Reblochon, and the cheese is part of daily life in the valley.

Accommodation ranges from chalets and apartments in the village to properties higher up near the lifts. Staying centrally makes it easy to walk to the main lifts and restaurants, while hillside chalets offer more space and views. Le Grand-Bornand, the neighbouring Aravis resort, is a short drive away for a change of scenery.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from mid-December to mid-April. January is often quiet, February is busy with French and international school holidays, and March brings longer, sunnier days. The upper sectors and Balme generally hold the most reliable snow.

  • Weekend traffic: Saturdays can bring queues near Annecy and on the roads into the Aravis.
  • Winter equipment: chains or winter tyres are required on Haute-Savoie mountain roads in winter.
  • Skis and luggage: declare skis, boards and boot bags at booking.
  • Return trip: allow around two hours before your flight, more on Saturdays.
