Saint-Gervais-les-Bains
Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is about 70 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 1 hour 5 minutes by road, at the foot of Mont Blanc in France. It is a year-round spa town with a gondola up to the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area and a historic mountain tramway that children love. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive the whole family from arrivals to your accommodation, with child seats on request.
- Distance from GVA: about 70 km
- Drive time: around 1 h 05
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
- Best for: families who want a town with services, gentle slopes and Mont Blanc views
- Getting there: A40 motorway to Le Fayet, then a short climb into the town
An easy motorway drive
The transfer follows the A40, often called the Autoroute Blanche, east from Geneva along the Arve valley towards Mont Blanc. You leave the motorway near Le Fayet, the lower district of Saint-Gervais, and climb briefly to the town centre. It is one of the most straightforward resort transfers from Geneva, with very little mountain road, which helps children who suffer from car sickness.
The A40 is busy on Saturdays during French school holidays, especially in the afternoon. If you have a choice of flights, a morning arrival or a midweek trip is usually calmer.
Why Saint-Gervais suits families
Unlike purpose-built resorts, Saint-Gervais is a working town with a church, pharmacies, supermarkets and a year-round population. For families this means everyday needs are close at hand. A gondola rises from the town to Le Bettex and on into the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area, which Saint-Gervais shares with Megève. The slopes here are mostly blue and red runs through forest and open alpine pasture, with dedicated beginner areas at Le Bettex where children can learn with views of Mont Blanc.
Since the ski area is large and gentle overall, it suits mixed groups: grandparents who cruise, parents who want variety and children taking lessons. Truly steep terrain is not the focus, which many families consider an advantage.
Lessons and the daily rhythm
Several ski schools teach children in Saint-Gervais and at Le Bettex, with snow gardens for little ones and group classes by level. Many families find it practical to stay near the gondola in town, or up at Le Bettex for ski-in access. Book lessons and equipment hire in advance for February and Easter.
Because the town has its own life, afternoons need not revolve around skiing. Children who finish lessons at lunchtime can come down and spend the rest of the day doing something different, which keeps energy and enthusiasm high across the week.
Parents of toddlers will appreciate the practical side of a town base: a pharmacy if someone runs a temperature, a supermarket for nappies and familiar food, and pavements where a pushchair can actually be used. These details matter far more with small children than the size of the ski area.
The tramway, the ice rink and the spa
The Tramway du Mont-Blanc, a rack railway that has run from Le Fayet since the early twentieth century, climbs towards the slopes above the valley in winter. For young train fans, the ride is a highlight of the trip, and it also gives access to skiing near the Col de Voza. Saint-Gervais has a large ice rink where children can skate, and the thermal baths at Le Fayet, the reason for the town's name, offer a family-friendly way to relax for parents and older children where age rules allow.
Sledging, snowshoeing and walks along the river add variety, and Chamonix is close enough for a half-day visit to see the famous valley.
Timing, snow and packing
The town itself is relatively low, so snow in the streets varies, but the slopes above Le Bettex and on the higher parts of the ski area generally hold snow from late December into April. January is calm, February is full of families, and March brings sunshine and softer snow. Pack goggles, mittens, warm layers and strong sun cream; the reflection off the snow facing Mont Blanc is intense. Bring swimwear if you plan to visit the spa or a pool.
For arrival day, a flight landing before mid-afternoon lets you settle in, visit the rental shop and take a short walk through the town before supper.
