Le Semnoz
Le Semnoz is about 70 km from Geneva Airport, a little over an hour by road via Annecy and the mountain road to the summit plateau. Trains go only as far as Annecy, and buses up the mountain are rare and seasonal, so for families and skiers a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the realistic way to reach the resort directly.
- Distance from GVA: about 70 km
- Drive time: around 1 hour 5 minutes
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
- Train option: to Annecy only
- Best for: family skiing, cross-country and snowshoeing, summer panoramas over the Alps
What Le Semnoz is
Le Semnoz is the mountain that rises directly above Annecy and the western shore of its lake. Its summit plateau, around the Crêt de Châtillon, offers one of the widest panoramas in the region, taking in Lake Annecy, the Aravis, the Bauges and, on clear days, Mont Blanc. In winter it is a small, family-oriented ski area with gentle slopes, as well as cross-country trails and snowshoe routes through the forest and open pastures. In summer it becomes a place for walking, mountain biking, paragliding and picnics with a view.
Le Semnoz is not a large resort town. Accommodation on the mountain is limited, and many visitors stay in Annecy or the surrounding villages and go up for the day, which makes transport an important part of planning.
Its closeness to Annecy is part of its appeal for visitors from further afield. You can combine a few days in the old town and on the lake with a day or two of gentle skiing or walking above it, all without long transfers. The difficulty is simply that the mountain road, rather than the distance, is what decides how easy the journey is.
Public transport: train to Annecy, then what?
The train covers only the first part. From Geneva Airport, take a train to Geneva Cornavin and then the Léman Express or a regional train to Annecy. From Annecy, a bus to the Semnoz runs only at certain times, mainly during the winter season and some summer periods, and with very limited frequency. Outside those times, you would need a taxi or a car.
For a visitor staying in Annecy who wants to go up for the day with light gear, this can be planned around the bus times. For someone arriving with luggage to stay on the mountain, or a family with skis and children, combining a train, a change and a rare mountain bus is unrealistic, especially after a flight.
Private transfer: airport to plateau
By car, your chauffeur leaves Geneva Airport, crosses the border into France and follows the A41 motorway to Annecy. From there, the road climbs through the forest to the summit plateau of Le Semnoz. In winter, this is a mountain road that requires suitable equipment, which transfer vehicles carry. You are dropped at your accommodation or at the foot of the slopes.
The same transfer can also take you to a hotel in Annecy, with a second trip to the Semnoz later in your stay. A chauffeur by the hour, from two hours, is useful for a day on the mountain followed by a return to town, without having to find parking or drive on snowy roads yourself.
Who benefits most from a car
- Families with young children, child seats and ski equipment;
- Groups such as school parties or clubs, travelling in a Sprinter minibus;
- Visitors staying on the mountain, where no regular bus service exists for most of the year;
- Late arrivals, as the last useful connections from Annecy leave early.
A Mercedes V-Class van carries up to seven passengers with skis and ten bags, which suits most family groups. The price is fixed per vehicle, so it can be shared.
Timing, weather and traffic
Traffic around Annecy can be dense at rush hour and on summer weekends, when the lake attracts many visitors. On winter weekends, the road up the Semnoz gets busy with day skiers from the Annecy area, and after snowfall it can be slow. Low cloud is also common: the plateau can be above a sea of fog while Annecy is grey, or the reverse. A chauffeur who knows the area will adjust timing to the conditions.
When should you choose public transport instead? If you are based in Annecy for a week, travelling light and only want to visit the Semnoz once or twice, the train to Annecy on arrival followed by the seasonal bus on a chosen day can be an economical plan. If your aim is to stay on the mountain, to ski with young children or to arrive the same evening as your flight, the car is the practical answer, and booking the return trip at the same time ensures you get back down for an early departure.
