Talloires
Talloires is about 61 km from Geneva Airport, a little over an hour by road via Annecy and the eastern shore of the lake. The village has no railway station, so public transport means a train to Annecy followed by a bus along the lake; for hotel guests, wedding parties and families, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is far simpler and goes straight to the door.
- Distance from GVA: about 61 km
- Drive time: around 1 hour 5 minutes
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
- Train option: to Annecy only, then bus along the east shore
- Best for: lakeside hotel stays, weddings, gourmet breaks, summer swimming and walking
Talloires on Lake Annecy
Talloires is a small, picturesque village on the eastern shore of Lake Annecy, set in a bay below steep wooded mountains. It grew up around a Benedictine abbey and has long attracted writers, painters and travellers with its calm setting and clear water. Today it is known for its lakeside hotels and restaurants, its small beaches and harbour, and as a starting point for walks on the Roc de Chère, a protected nature reserve on the headland. Nearby Menthon-Saint-Bernard is overlooked by its well-known castle, and across the lake lies the long western shore with its cycle path.
Many visitors come for a special occasion: a wedding, an anniversary, a gourmet weekend or a seminar in one of the lakeside venues. That shapes how they want to arrive, often with formal clothes and more luggage than usual, and with little appetite for a journey in several stages.
Others come simply for the lake: to swim from the small beaches, take out a boat, or walk the shoreline paths in spring and autumn when the village is quieter. Even then, the absence of a station means the question of the final leg comes up every time.
Public transport: train and lakeside bus
From Geneva Airport, take a train to Geneva Cornavin and continue by Léman Express or regional train to Annecy. From Annecy, buses run along the eastern shore through Veyrier-du-Lac and Menthon-Saint-Bernard to Talloires. In summer, boats on the lake also call at Talloires, which is a delightful way to arrive on a fine afternoon if you are travelling light.
This works for a relaxed traveller with a small bag and plenty of time. It is less suitable with suitcases, in the evening when buses are fewer, or for wedding guests in their finest outfits. Each change adds waiting time, and after a delayed flight the last bus may already have left.
Private transfer along the lake
By car, your chauffeur leaves the airport, crosses the border into France, takes the A41 motorway to Annecy and then follows the scenic road along the eastern shore to Talloires. You are dropped at the entrance of your hotel or venue, without carrying your bags through stations or along the lakefront. The final stretch along the water is one of the most attractive drives in the region.
A transfer is particularly convenient for:
- Wedding parties and guests, who can travel together in a Mercedes V-Class van or Sprinter minibus;
- Couples on a special stay, for whom the First Class Sedan, a Mercedes S-Class, adds comfort;
- Families needing child seats and space for luggage;
- Seminar groups arriving on the same flight, who can request an invoice for their company.
Traffic around Annecy
The main point of uncertainty on this route is traffic around Annecy, which can be heavy at weekday peaks and very busy on summer weekends, when the lake attracts large numbers of visitors. The road along the eastern shore is narrow in places and slows down in high season. A chauffeur familiar with the area will plan accordingly, but it is wise to allow some margin, especially for your return to the airport on a Sunday afternoon in July or August.
Weighing up the options
For a solo walker with a backpack, the train-and-bus route or a summer boat crossing is a pleasant and economical choice. For almost everyone else, and especially for couples and groups attending an event, a car saves time and stress, and the fixed price per vehicle can be shared. Booking the return at the same time is sensible, as public transport from Talloires early in the morning is very limited.
Some guests also book a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) during their stay, for an excursion to the Aravis, a visit to Annecy's old town in the evening, or a trip to a restaurant around the lake without worrying about driving.
