Geneva Airport to Annecy: train, bus or private transfer?

Annecy is 44 km and about 40 minutes from Geneva Airport by car. Compare cross-border trains and coaches with a direct private transfer to your door.

GVA → AnnecyCity · France

Annecy

Annecy lies about 44 km south of Geneva Airport, roughly 40 minutes by car on the A41 motorway in France. Public transport exists, with cross-border trains via Geneva and coach services, but there is no direct train from the airport and changes are part of the journey. For most visitors with luggage, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the simplest way to get from the arrivals hall to the lake.

  • Distance from GVA: about 44 km
  • Drive time: around 40 minutes
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
  • Rail: regional trains with at least one change, via Geneva
  • Car is better for: lakeside villages, villas, families, evening arrivals

Getting to Annecy by train

Annecy has a railway station close to the town centre, and Geneva and Annecy are linked by regional cross-border trains. From the airport, however, you first need to reach Geneva by train, then continue on a French regional service, which means at least one change and often more depending on the timing. For a light traveller staying in central Annecy, near the station or the old town, it is a workable and affordable option.

It gets more complicated if you are staying around the lake. Villages such as Talloires, Veyrier-du-Lac, Menthon-Saint-Bernard or Sévrier are not on the railway, so you would need a bus or taxi for the final leg, with suitcases, after already changing trains.

Coaches and shared shuttles

Coach services run between Geneva Airport and Annecy, and in some periods shared shuttle services operate as well. Coaches can be convenient if a departure fits your arrival time. The downsides are fixed schedules that may not match a delayed flight, drop-off at the coach station rather than your accommodation, and less flexibility for late-night landings. Shared shuttles may make several stops before yours.

Why many visitors choose a private car

The drive itself is short and straightforward: across the border, onto the A41 and down past Saint-Julien-en-Genevois and the Salève towards Annecy. In about 40 minutes you are at your door, whether it is a hotel in the old town, an apartment near the Pâquier lawns or a villa on the eastern shore. With children, the advantage is obvious: child seats are provided on request, there is no need to haul bags between platforms and the trip is short enough that nobody gets restless.

Groups benefit too. Annecy is a popular venue for weddings, birthdays and company seminars, and a Van (Mercedes V-Class) for up to 7 passengers or a Minibus (Mercedes Sprinter) for larger parties keeps everyone together at a price fixed per vehicle, which often compares well with buying several individual tickets. For late flights, when trains and coaches are fewer, the car is often the only practical option.

When the train is fine and when the car wins

Choose the train or coach if you travel light, stay near Annecy station, have a flexible schedule and arrive during the day. Choose the car if you are staying around the lake or in the surrounding hills, travelling with young children or older relatives, carrying sports equipment such as bikes or skis, or arriving late in the evening. Business visitors with a meeting in Annecy or the nearby industrial areas also tend to prefer a car, which goes straight to the site.

In winter, Annecy is also a stepping stone towards the ski resorts of the Aravis, such as La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand; a car can take you there directly instead of stopping in town.

Annecy itself rewards a few days. The old town with its canals and the Palais de l’Isle, the castle overlooking the rooftops and the clear waters of the lake are the main draws, with cycling paths along the shore and boat trips in summer. A chauffeur by the hour (minimum 2 hours) can be booked for a tour around the lake or a visit to the surrounding villages, which is a convenient way to see more without driving yourself.

Practical tips

The A41 can be busy at weekday rush hours around the border and on summer weekends near the lake. In July and August, traffic in Annecy itself slows down around the old town and the lakeside roads. If you are flying out of Geneva, allow a little extra for border traffic. Remember that the airport also has a French sector; your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals area you specify.
