The route from Geneva to Morillon
After crossing into France, the route follows the A40 motorway towards Chamonix through the Arve valley. Rather than continuing to Cluses and the climb to Flaine, the road to Morillon heads north-east into the Giffre valley via Taninges, a pleasant drive along the river with mountains rising on both sides. Morillon sits on the valley floor, between Taninges and Samoëns.
The roads are mainly valley routes, so the journey is less demanding than to high-altitude resorts. The last stretch up to Morillon 1100, also called Les Esserts, climbs a series of bends; winter tyres or chains may be needed after fresh snow. Your chauffeur will drop you at either level according to where your accommodation is.
Skiing the Grand Massif from Morillon
Morillon is one of the entry points to the Grand Massif, a large linked area that also includes Flaine, Samoëns, Les Carroz and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. A gondola rises from the village to Morillon 1100, where a small resort centre and a beginners' area sit among the trees, and lifts continue upwards to connect with the rest of the network.
Morillon's local slopes are mostly gentle and tree-lined, ideal for beginners, children and skiers who enjoy cruising through the forest. From the upper lifts, confident skiers can head towards the high, open bowl of Flaine, where the snow is generally more reliable, and to the famous long run down to Sixt through the valley, which is a memorable descent when snow cover allows.
Because Morillon sits relatively low, the lower slopes rely on good snowfall and snowmaking, and conditions at village level vary. Higher up, the Grand Massif offers plenty of terrain to keep intermediate skiers busy for a week.
The village and staying in Morillon
Morillon is a traditional Savoyard village with a church, a handful of shops and restaurants and chalets spread across the valley. It feels lived-in and calm rather than resort-focused. Morillon 1100 offers apartments and chalets closer to the slopes, with ski-in, ski-out possibilities for some properties.
The Giffre valley is beautiful in winter. The nearby Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval, a vast natural amphitheatre of cliffs at the end of the valley, is a striking sight for walks or snowshoe outings. Samoëns, a few minutes up the valley, has a lively village centre with markets and restaurants, worth an evening visit.
Many families choose Morillon for its relaxed atmosphere and easy access to a large ski area without the bustle of the bigger resorts. Self-catering accommodation is common, and the village has everything needed for a comfortable week.
When to go and practical tips
The season generally runs from mid-December to early April. January and February usually offer the most reliable snow at all levels; in March, the higher parts of the Grand Massif are often in good condition while the village slopes soften.
