A weekend from Geneva through Lavaux and Gruyères brings together two of Switzerland's great food landscapes: on day one, the vineyard terraces above Lake Geneva and an evening in Montreux, about 91 km from Geneva Airport; on day two, the green hills of the Gruyère region, its medieval hilltop town, its cheese and a chocolate stop before heading home. With a chauffeur from AirportsTransfers.ch, everyone can enjoy the tastings, since nobody has to drive.
- Day 1: Lausanne, the Lavaux terraces, wine tasting, Vevey and a night in Montreux
- Day 2: Gruyères town and castle, a cheese dairy, a chocolate stop, return to Geneva
- Wine to try: Chasselas, the signature white grape of Lavaux
- Food to try: Gruyère AOP, fondue moitié-moitié, meringues with double cream
- Border crossing: none, the whole route stays in Switzerland
Day 1: into the Lavaux vineyards
From Geneva, the motorway reaches Lausanne, about 61 km from the airport, in under an hour. Just east of the city, leave the main road for the corniche route that winds through Lavaux, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of vineyard terraces stepping down to the lake, built and maintained by monks and winegrowers since the Middle Ages. The stone walls catch the sun and the reflection off the lake, which locals say gives the area three suns: the sky, the water and the warm walls. Villages such as Lutry, Cully, Epesses, Chexbres and Saint-Saphorin cluster around their churches and wine cellars. The best-known appellations, Dézaley and Calamin, are both classified as grand cru and grown on the steepest slopes.
Many family estates open their cellars for tastings, and village wine bars serve local wines by the glass, often with views straight across to the French Alps. Lunch on a terrace with perch fillets from the lake, a classic of the region, and a glass of Chasselas. In the afternoon, walk a short stretch of the marked vineyard paths, then continue to Vevey for a stroll on the lakefront.
Evening in Montreux
Spend the night in Montreux, known for its mild climate, flower-lined promenade and the statue of Freddie Mercury looking out over the water. If you arrive early enough, the Château de Chillon, on its rock just beyond the town, is a short drive away. Dinner can be lakeside or in the old village above the centre. This is the natural halfway point of the weekend: wine country behind you, cheese country ahead.
Day 2: Gruyères, the town and the castle
From Montreux, the road climbs inland to the Fribourg pre-Alps and the wide, green valley of the Gruyère region. The small medieval town of Gruyères sits on a hill crowned by its castle, with a single cobbled main street lined with old houses, fountains and restaurants. The castle, one of the best-known in Switzerland, holds rooms decorated across several centuries and offers views over the pastures. Nearby, a museum devoted to the Swiss artist H.R. Giger, creator of the creature designs for the film Alien, makes a surreal contrast with the medieval setting.
At the foot of the hill, a demonstration dairy shows how Gruyère AOP is made from raw cow's milk in large copper vats, with tasting of cheeses of different ages. Lunch should be a fondue moitié-moitié, made with Gruyère and Vacherin Fribourgeois, followed by meringues with the region's famous double cream.
Chocolate and the road home
A few minutes from Gruyères, the village of Broc is home to a long-established chocolate factory with a visitor experience covering the history of Swiss chocolate and, naturally, tastings. From there, the drive back to Geneva runs via Bulle and the motorway through Fribourg's countryside and Lausanne, so you are home by early evening.
- Saturday: Lausanne, Lavaux tasting and lunch, Vevey, night in Montreux
- Sunday: Gruyères castle and town, dairy, fondue lunch, Broc, return
- Variation: reverse the order to end the weekend with a sunset among the vines
