The route from Geneva Airport

The motorway takes you along Lake Geneva, across the Plateau via Bern and on to Zurich, then east along Lake Zurich and Lake Walen to the Rhine valley and Chur. From Chur the road climbs through Churwalden to the Lenzerheide plateau, passes the lake and descends the other side to Tiefencastel, where several valleys meet. From there you head south up the Julier road into the Surses, also known by its German name Oberhalbstein, and reach Savognin after a short climb. The road over Lenzerheide is a main route, cleared and maintained throughout the winter, and the Julier road beyond Savognin is one of the main winter links to the Engadine. Traffic around Zurich on Saturdays is the main variable, and fresh snow can slow the climb from Chur.

The ski area

Savognin's lifts rise from the edge of the village up the slopes towards Piz Martegnas, opening up a ski area whose main strength is the length and width of its runs. Wide blue and red pistes sweep down open slopes and through forest, often with generous space even at busy times, which makes the resort especially appealing to families, intermediates and people returning to skiing after a break. There are a few steeper runs to keep stronger skiers interested, a snowpark, and off-piste opportunities with a guide after fresh snow. The resort has invested in snowmaking to secure the lower slopes, while the upper areas usually have good natural cover in mid-winter. Lift queues are rarely long compared with the better-known Graubünden resorts.

For a week, Savognin offers enough variety to keep most families happy, and the short distance to Lenzerheide and the Arosa Lenzerheide ski area means you can add a day there for a change of scenery. Cross-country trails run along the valley floor towards Tinizong and Rona, and there are sledging runs and winter walking paths for non-skiers.

The village and the valley

Savognin is a traditional Romansh village with old stone houses, painted façades and three baroque churches, set on both banks of the river Gelgia. The painter Giovanni Segantini lived and worked here for several years, and his landscapes of the Surses helped make the region known; a walk through the village reveals places linked to his time here. Accommodation is mainly in family-run hotels, apartments and chalets. Further up the valley, the Marmorera reservoir and the climb towards the Julier Pass add dramatic scenery for winter walks and drives. The atmosphere is calm, friendly and unpretentious, with a strong local identity. Romansh is heard alongside German, and many signs are bilingual.

When to go and practical tips

The season runs from December to early April. Mid-winter offers the best snow, while March brings long sunny days. Swiss school holidays in February are the busiest period, and January or March offer quieter slopes. Saturday is the main changeover day, which affects motorway traffic and the road over Lenzerheide. Our vehicles carry winter tyres and chains when needed, and our drivers are used to Graubünden mountain roads. Families should mention child seats and the number of ski bags at booking so that the right vehicle is sent.

The return journey

Plan around four and a half hours for the drive back, plus time for check-in at Geneva Airport. An afternoon or evening flight allows a relaxed morning. Your chauffeur will confirm the pick-up time the day before and keep track of the weather on the passes.
