Geneva Cornavin Station
Geneva Cornavin, the city's main railway station, is about 8 km from Geneva Airport by road, around 20 minutes depending on traffic, and only a few minutes by train from the airport station. Cornavin as a rail hub
Cornavin is the heart of Geneva's rail network. From here, Swiss trains run along Lake Geneva to Lausanne and the Rhône valley, and on towards Bern, Zurich and the rest of the country. French high-speed trains link Geneva with Paris and Lyon, and the cross-border Léman Express network connects the city with the surrounding French region of Haute-Savoie and the Pays de Gex as well as stations around the canton. Trams and buses stop in front of the station, linking it with the international district, the lake and other parts of the city. The station has shops, cafés, ticket offices and luggage lockers, and it can be busy at rush hour with commuters from both sides of the border. Signs are in French, with key information also in English, and departure boards make it easy to find platforms for onward trains.
What is around the station
Leaving Cornavin towards the lake, you enter the Pâquis, a lively, cosmopolitan district with a wide range of hotels, restaurants and shops. A few minutes' walk brings you to the lakefront, with views of the Jet d'Eau, the city's famous fountain, and the Bains des Pâquis, a popular public bathing spot on a jetty. Next to the station stands the Basilica of Notre-Dame. Crossing the Rhône over one of the bridges, you reach the shopping streets on the left bank and, uphill from there, the Old Town with St Pierre Cathedral and the Maison Tavel. The UN district and the Palais des Nations are a short tram ride away. Many visitors choose hotels near Cornavin because it is so central and well connected. The area is busy in the evening and has a good choice of international cuisine, from Lebanese to Ethiopian, alongside classic Swiss dishes.
Train or car from the airport?
The train from the airport station to Cornavin is quick, frequent and simple, and visitors arriving by air can usually obtain a free ticket for public transport from a machine in the baggage hall, valid for a short period to reach the city. For a solo traveller with a carry-on bag, there is little reason to take a car. A private transfer makes sense in other situations: with several suitcases, with young children or older travellers, with a group, or when you are heading to a hotel a little way from the station. It also helps late at night, when trains are less frequent, or on arrival from a long-haul flight when you would rather not deal with stairs, escalators and crowded platforms.
Connecting to an onward train
Some travellers land at Geneva and continue by train from Cornavin to France or other Swiss cities. If your connection is tight and you are carrying bulky luggage, a car to the station drop-off point can be less stressful than the train with a change of platform. Allow sufficient time: traffic in central Geneva can be slow at peak hours, and international trains to France may require you to be on the platform a little earlier.
