Geneva Cornavin Station
Geneva Cornavin, the city's main railway station, is about 8 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 20 minutes by road. The direct train covers the same trip in a few minutes and is the obvious choice for most travellers, but a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch still makes sense with heavy luggage, children, groups, or when your real destination is a hotel or office near the station rather than the platform.
- Distance from GVA: about 8 km by road
- Drive time: around 20 minutes, more at rush hour
- By train: direct and frequent, no change needed
- Border crossing: none
- A car makes sense for: luggage, families, groups, night arrivals
The train: hard to beat for most people
Geneva Airport's railway station lies directly beneath the terminal, and frequent trains run to Cornavin without a change. The ride takes only a few minutes, faster than any car can manage through city traffic. Arriving passengers can usually collect a free public transport ticket in the baggage reclaim area, valid for a limited time, which covers this journey. For a solo traveller or a couple with a suitcase each, arriving during the day, there is honestly no better-value option, and we would not suggest otherwise.
Cornavin is also the hub for onward journeys: regional trains along the lake towards Nyon, Morges and Lausanne, the Léman Express to Annemasse and Haute-Savoie, and international services towards France and Italy. If your next step is another train, the airport rail link is the natural first leg.
Even the walk is manageable: at the airport, signs lead from arrivals down to the platforms in a few minutes, and at Cornavin the station exits onto the square in front, close to many hotels and tram stops. For a visitor with a rucksack or one wheeled case, the whole trip from baggage reclaim to the street outside Cornavin is quick and inexpensive.
Why some travellers still book a car
The station is rarely the final destination. Many travellers heading to Cornavin are actually going to one of the many hotels clustered around it, to offices in the Pâquis or Saint-Gervais quarters, or to apartments a few streets away. The train gets you to the platform quickly, but then come escalators, underpasses and a walk with luggage through a busy station, often followed by a taxi queue or a tram. A car takes you to the hotel entrance instead.
That difference matters most with several large suitcases, ski bags, a pushchair or young children. A Mercedes E-Class carries three passengers and three bags; a Mercedes V-Class carries up to seven passengers and ten bags, and child seats are provided on request.
Groups and business arrivals
For a group, the logistics of getting everyone through the airport station, onto the same train and out at Cornavin with their bags can be more trouble than the short distance suggests. A Mercedes Sprinter minibus picks the whole group up in arrivals and delivers it to the hotel door. Business travellers arriving for meetings in the city sometimes prefer a chauffeur who meets them with a name sign and drives them straight to the office, especially after a long-haul flight, and companies can receive invoices.
Late nights and early mornings
Trains between the airport and Cornavin run from early morning until late evening, but very early departures and late-night arrivals can fall outside the most frequent services. If your flight lands close to midnight or leaves at dawn, a car avoids waiting on a platform. Because your chauffeur tracks the flight, delays are absorbed and the waiting is included. On the return, being collected at your hotel near Cornavin and dropped at departures saves the reverse trip through the station with luggage.
Traffic around the station
Road traffic around Cornavin can be heavy, particularly at rush hour and when there are works in the area, so twenty minutes is a typical time rather than a guarantee. If you are catching a train from Cornavin after landing, the airport train is usually the safer bet for timing; the car is about comfort and door-to-door convenience rather than speed on this route.
The same logic applies if Cornavin is only a stopover: if you are continuing by train to Lausanne, Bern or the Alps, the direct train from the airport often serves you better, and some of those trains start at the airport itself. A transfer is most useful when the city is your destination.
