EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse is 259 km from Geneva Airport by road, about two hours and forty-five minutes across Switzerland to the point where it meets France and Germany. Trains reach Basel easily, but the airport itself needs an extra connection, so a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the simplest way to go terminal to terminal with luggage, children or a tight schedule.

  • Distance: 259 km by road
  • Drive time: about 2 h 45
  • Border crossing: the airport lies just across the border in France, reached from Basel
  • Typical reasons: fare differences, missed connections, open-jaw trips, trade fairs
  • Serves: Basel, Mulhouse, Freiburg and the Upper Rhine region

Why link Geneva and Basel's airport?

EuroAirport is unusual: it stands on French soil a few kilometres north-west of Basel, and is run jointly by France and Switzerland, serving three countries at once. It has a broad network of European flights, many operated by low-cost carriers, as well as cargo and business aviation. Geneva and Basel often offer different routes, schedules and fares, so travellers regularly switch between them. Typical cases include a Geneva flight that has been cancelled, with a rebooking from Basel; an open-jaw trip that starts with a conference in Basel and ends with skiing in the Alps; or a cheaper fare to a holiday destination from one of the two airports. Basel's major international fairs, including its renowned contemporary art fair, also bring visitors who land in Geneva and continue north.

The route north

From Geneva Airport the car follows Lake Geneva to Lausanne, crosses the plateau via Fribourg to Bern, and then continues north on the motorway past Olten and through the Jura hills to Basel. From there, the airport is reached via the road that links the city with the terminal, without having to cross the old town. The route is motorway all the way and usually smooth, with the main bottlenecks being the Bern area and the approaches to Basel during rush hour. Roadworks are frequent on the Swiss network in summer, so a margin is always wise. When you book, simply tell us your airline and terminal entrance so the chauffeur drops you at the right place.

Train or private car?

Intercity trains from Geneva Airport run to Basel's main station, sometimes with a change along the way, and from there a regular airport bus links the station to EuroAirport. For a solo traveller with a carry-on bag, this is a sensible option. With several large suitcases, ski bags, a buggy or tired children, however, the changes at stations and the bus transfer quickly become a burden, especially if trains are busy. A private car takes you from arrivals at Geneva directly to departures at Basel, with all luggage in one place. Groups of four to seven travellers often find that a V-Class shared between them is good value per person, and for very early flights a car avoids depending on the first trains of the day.

What your transfer includes

The chauffeur monitors your flight into Geneva, meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and waits for free if you land late. The fleet includes the Mercedes E-Class for up to three passengers and three bags, the S-Class for executive travel, the V-Class for up to seven people and ten bags, and the Sprinter minibus for larger groups and exhibitors. Child seats are available on request. If your trip includes a stop in Basel or Bern on the way, for a meeting or to collect a colleague, it can be arranged in advance.

Timing your connection

For a departure from Basel, add the drive time, a traffic margin of thirty minutes or more and your airline's check-in requirements. Low-cost carriers often close check-in and bag drop strictly, so arriving early pays off. On Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, traffic around Bern can be dense. During the big Basel fairs, the city's roads and the airport are busier than usual, so allow extra time. If your Geneva flight has been cancelled and you have been rebooked from Basel, call us immediately: the sooner we know, the sooner a chauffeur can be on the way.
