Grenoble Alpes-Isère Airport

Grenoble Alpes-Isère Airport is 174 km from Geneva Airport by road, about one hour and fifty minutes' drive south-west into France. Its traffic is largely made up of winter charter flights for the Alpine resorts, so a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is a practical link when a ski group arrives at one airport and leaves from the other, or when a flight is diverted.

  • Distance: 174 km by road
  • Drive time: about 1 h 50
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
  • Busiest period: winter Saturdays and Sundays
  • Location: in the countryside north-west of Grenoble, nearer Voiron than the city

Why travel between Geneva and Grenoble airports?

Despite its name, Grenoble Alpes-Isère Airport does not sit next to Grenoble: it lies in the rolling countryside of the Isère department, some distance north-west of the city. Its role is above all seasonal, with charter and holiday flights in winter bringing skiers bound for resorts such as Alpe d'Huez, Les Deux Alpes, Chamrousse and the Vercors, and a quieter schedule the rest of the year. Geneva, with its wide range of scheduled airlines, is the other major gateway to the French Alps. Many ski holidays therefore involve both: a tour operator's charter into Grenoble on the way out and a scheduled flight from Geneva on the way back, or a diversion when snow or fog closes one airport and the aircraft lands at the other. Some travellers also choose whichever airport has the more convenient fare for their dates, then need a road link to make the itinerary work.

The route through Savoie and Isère

From Geneva Airport the car crosses the border into France and takes the A41 south past Annecy to Chambéry, then continues west on the motorway towards Lyon before branching off towards Voiron and the airport. The drive passes the southern end of Lac du Bourget and the edge of the Chartreuse massif, with the limestone cliffs of the Pre-Alps visible for much of the way. In normal traffic it takes just under two hours. The busiest sections in winter are around Chambéry, where holiday traffic heading to the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys converges, so Saturday transfers need a generous margin.

Train or private car?

Reaching Grenoble's airport by public transport from Geneva is complicated: there is no rail station at the airport, so the trip involves a train into France, usually with a change, then a coach or taxi for the final leg, and connections vary with the season. That is manageable for an independent traveller with a backpack, much less so for a family with skis, boot bags and young children, or for a group that needs to stay together. A private car removes the changes: you leave Geneva's arrivals hall, load everything into one vehicle and are dropped at the terminal entrance in Grenoble. For groups of six or seven, a V-Class shared between everyone often costs less per head than expected.

What your transfer includes

Your chauffeur keeps track of your flight, greets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and waits at no extra cost if the plane is delayed. Vehicles are matched to your party: the Mercedes E-Class for up to three passengers and three bags, the S-Class for executive comfort, the V-Class for up to seven passengers with ten bags and skis, and the Sprinter for larger ski clubs or school groups. Child seats are fitted on request, and the chauffeur helps load and unload luggage at both ends. If you are not flying from Grenoble but heading to a resort after a diverted flight, we can also adapt the destination.

Timing tips for winter flights

Charter flights often operate in waves on Saturdays and Sundays, and the terminal can be crowded at peak times. Add at least thirty to forty-five minutes to the usual drive for weekend traffic, and check your tour operator's or airline's check-in deadline, which may be earlier than for scheduled flights. If you are arriving into Geneva first, ski equipment can take longer to come out at baggage reclaim on busy winter days. When snow is forecast, motorways remain the most reliable route, but conditions can still slow traffic; the chauffeur will monitor this and may suggest an earlier departure. If your flight is diverted, call us as soon as you land.
