Getting from Geneva Airport to Basel
The motorway leaves Lake Geneva at Lausanne and heads north, either along the foot of the Jura via Yverdon, Neuchâtel, Biel and Solothurn, or via Fribourg and Bern. Both routes meet the main north-south axis near Olten, then climb through the Belchen tunnel under the Jura and descend to Basel. Most of the trip is on motorway, but the approach to Basel and the Jura tunnel can slow down at peak hours.
Many visitors wonder why they would fly into Geneva for Basel, which has its own EuroAirport. The answer is often a better choice of flights or fares, a combined trip with western Switzerland, or a connection missed elsewhere. A private transfer makes the longer road leg straightforward, with no changes and the luggage in the boot.
The old town and the Rhine
Basel's old town spreads over the hill on the left bank of the Rhine, known as Grossbasel. The red sandstone Minster, with its twin towers, coloured roof tiles and cloisters, overlooks the river from the Pfalz terrace, and the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam is buried inside. Below, the Marktplatz is dominated by the bright red Town Hall, painted with murals, while steep lanes and stairways lead to quiet squares and fountains.
Across the river lies Kleinbasel, more relaxed and lively in the evenings. The two halves are linked by bridges and by small ferries that cross the current attached to a cable, powered only by the flow of the water. In summer, swimming in the Rhine is a local ritual: residents float downstream with their clothes in a waterproof bag, then climb out along the riverbank promenades.
A city of museums
For its size, Basel has an exceptional density of museums. The Kunstmuseum Basel houses one of the oldest public art collections in the world, from old masters to modern art. In the suburb of Riehen, the Fondation Beyeler, in a building by Renzo Piano surrounded by gardens, shows modern art and major temporary exhibitions. The Museum Tinguely, by the Rhine, is devoted to the playful kinetic sculptures of Jean Tinguely. Just across the German border, the Vitra Design Museum campus in Weil am Rhein completes the picture for architecture lovers.
Basel's cultural life also includes Fasnacht, the city's carnival, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, during which masked cliques parade through the streets with fifes and drums.
Business and trade fairs
Basel is one of the world's leading centres for the pharmaceutical and life-sciences industries, and the exhibition centre hosts major international fairs, including Art Basel. During large fairs, hotels and roads are under pressure, and planning transport early is essential. Companies sending teams to Basel can book transfers with invoices, and a Sprinter minibus keeps a delegation and its equipment together. A chauffeur by the hour, with a minimum of two hours, is useful for days split between sites.
Neighbourhoods and day trips
- Grossbasel old town: close to museums, shops and the Minster
- Kleinbasel: riverside promenades, restaurants and nightlife
- Near the exhibition centre: practical for fair visitors
- Augusta Raurica: the remains of a Roman town with a theatre, a short drive east
- Alsace and the Black Forest: Colmar, the wine route and forested hills within reach
Basel's public transport is efficient, and many hotels give guests a pass for local trams and buses during their stay.
