From Geneva Airport to Weil am Rhein
The journey follows Swiss motorways from Lake Geneva to the Basel area, either via the Jura foot lakes or via Bern, then through the Belchen tunnel and down to the Rhine. Weil am Rhein lies immediately north of Basel, and the last few minutes of the drive take you across the city and over the border into Germany. Traffic around Basel can be dense at rush hour and during major fairs, so an experienced driver who knows the approaches saves time.
Because Weil am Rhein sits on the edge of Basel, many visitors to the Swiss city's fairs and companies choose to stay here, and the town is linked to Basel's tram network. A direct transfer from Geneva removes the need to change trains in Switzerland and then cross the border with luggage.
The Vitra Campus
The furniture company Vitra has turned its production site into one of the most remarkable collections of contemporary architecture in Europe. The Vitra Design Museum, a white, sculptural building, was the first work in Europe by Frank Gehry. Nearby stand Zaha Hadid's angular fire station, her first completed building; a conference pavilion by Tadao Ando; a geodesic dome in the spirit of Buckminster Fuller; and the VitraHaus by Herzog and de Meuron, a stack of gabled houses that showcases furniture design. A tall spiral slide tower by the artist Carsten Höller lets visitors take the fast way down.
The campus offers architecture tours, temporary exhibitions on design, a shop and a café, and is a pilgrimage site for designers and students. Even visitors with only a passing interest in architecture tend to find it fascinating.
Because the campus is spread over a large site, comfortable shoes are useful, and it is worth checking in advance which buildings can only be visited on a guided tour. A visit combines easily with the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, on the Swiss side, for a full day devoted to art and architecture.
The Rhine and the three-country corner
The Dreiländerbrücke, or Three Countries Bridge, is a slender footbridge and cycle bridge spanning the Rhine between Weil am Rhein and the French town of Huningue. Walking across it takes only a few minutes, and it is a pleasant way to cross from Germany into France. Close by, on the Swiss bank at Basel's port, a monument marks the spot where the three borders meet in the river.
Along the Rhine, the town has riverside paths and a large landscaped park created for a garden show, while the Tüllinger hill above the town, covered in vineyards, offers views over Basel and the river towards the Jura and the Vosges.
Wine, shopping and day trips
Weil am Rhein is the southern gateway to the Markgräflerland, a gentle wine region between the Rhine and the Black Forest, known for its Gutedel (Chasselas) white wines and village inns. Shopping is another draw: many Swiss residents cross the border to visit the town's shops and markets.
- Basel: museums, the old town and the Rhine, minutes away
- Lörrach: the neighbouring town with the ruins of Rötteln castle
- Black Forest: forested valleys and the Feldberg summit within reach
- Alsace: Colmar and the Alsace wine route across the Rhine
Practical tips
Germany uses the euro, while Basel uses Swiss francs, so carry a card that works in both. Language is German, though French and English are widely understood in this border area. If you are visiting a fair in Basel, staying in Weil can be convenient, but book early because the whole region fills up during large events. Remember that you will be crossing a border, so all passengers should carry valid travel documents.
