Geneva city centre
Geneva Airport sits close to the city, and a private car takes you from the arrivals hall to the centre in about 15 minutes in normal traffic. The short distance does not mean the trip needs no planning, though: rush hours, events and the narrow streets of the Old Town all play a part, especially for a family with plenty of luggage. This guide answers the two questions we are asked most often about this route.
How long is the drive from Geneva Airport to downtown Geneva?
The drive from Geneva Airport to the city centre takes about 15 minutes in normal traffic. Your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, walks with you to the car and drives you straight to your hotel, office or home address, door to door. There are no stops for other passengers, because the car is reserved for you alone.
What can make the journey longer
Fifteen minutes is a typical figure, not a guarantee. A few situations regularly add time:
- Weekday rush hours, in the morning and late afternoon, when commuters cross the city.
- Large events and international conferences, which bring extra traffic and occasional road closures around the international district and the lakeside.
- Roadworks and diversions in the centre, which can lengthen the final approach to some addresses.
- Bad weather, which slows traffic everywhere.
None of this changes what you pay. The fixed price per vehicle is shown instantly in the booking form and does not change with traffic or with a late flight.
What happens if your flight is late
We track your flight, so the chauffeur adjusts to the actual landing time instead of the scheduled one. Waiting caused by a late flight is included, and you do not need to call anyone from the plane. Take your time at passport control and baggage reclaim; your chauffeur will be in the arrivals hall when you come out. Pick-up is in the Swiss sector by default, and in the French sector on request.
Planning the return trip to the airport
For your departure, the short drive is an advantage, but leave a comfortable margin. Add the 15-minute drive to the time you need for check-in, bag drop and security, then add a buffer for rush hour if your flight leaves in the morning or early evening. If you book the return transfer at the same time as your arrival, everything is arranged in one go and you receive a confirmation for each journey.
Is a private car worth it for such a short trip?
Trains run from the airport station to Geneva's main station, Cornavin, and many hotels are close to it. For a solo traveller with a small bag, public transport can work well. A private car makes the difference when you have several suitcases, children, a business meeting to reach on time, an address far from a station or a late arrival. You go from the arrivals hall to your door without carrying luggage through stations or looking for a taxi rank, and you know the price before you travel.
Can a family with lots of bags get a private car from Geneva Airport to the Old Town?
Yes. Your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board and drives you door to door, wherever road access allows; the drive to the city centre takes around 15 minutes. The Old Town is the historic heart of Geneva, on the hill around the cathedral, and it needs a little more preparation than a standard hotel address.
Choose a vehicle with enough room
For a family with lots of bags, the Mercedes V-Class van is usually the right choice: it takes up to 7 passengers and 10 bags, so nobody travels with a suitcase on their lap. The full fleet is:
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | 3 | 3 bags | couples, small families with light luggage |
| Mercedes S-Class | 3 | 2 bags | VIP and business travel |
| Mercedes V-Class | 7 | 10 bags | families with lots of luggage, pushchairs |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | group luggage | large families and groups |
Because the price is per vehicle and not per person, the right choice is the one that fits your passengers and your luggage comfortably. If you are unsure, declare every bag, pushchair and bulky item at booking and choose the larger vehicle.
Give the exact address in the Old Town
Some Old Town streets are narrow, steep or restricted, so give the exact address of your hotel or apartment when booking, together with any instructions you have received from your host, such as an entrance on a side street or a meeting point with the owner. This lets the chauffeur plan the best place to stop, as close as possible to your door. If the last few metres cannot be driven, the chauffeur stops at the nearest accessible point and helps with your luggage.
Child seats and boosters
Child seats and boosters are available on request. Indicate the number and ages of the children when booking so the right seats are fitted before your arrival. Children count as passengers, which matters when choosing between the E-Class and the V-Class.
Your arrival, step by step
- Before you travel, you receive your instant e-mail confirmation with the details of your booking.
- While you are in the air, we follow your flight and adjust the pick-up to the real landing time.
- After baggage reclaim, your chauffeur is waiting in the arrivals hall with a name board.
- The chauffeur loads your luggage, fits the requested child seats and drives you to the Old Town.
- About 15 minutes later in normal traffic, you are at your door.
