Getting from Geneva Airport to Saas-Grund
The route runs around Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then up the Rhône valley via Martigny and Sion to Visp. At Visp, you turn south into the Vispertal, and at Stalden the valley divides: the right-hand branch leads to Zermatt, the left one into the Saas valley. The road climbs steadily through the narrow valley to Saas-Grund.
Unlike car-free Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund is accessible by road, so your chauffeur can drop you at your hotel or chalet. The Saas valley road is open all winter but can be affected by snow, so winter tyres and sometimes chains are needed. Travelling by public transport involves a train to Visp and a post bus up the valley.
Skiing at Hohsaas
Saas-Grund's ski area, Hohsaas, rises on the slopes west of the village to well above 3,000 metres, giving reliable snow and impressive views of the surrounding four-thousand-metre peaks, including the Weissmies and Lagginhorn. The area is not vast, but it offers wide runs suited to intermediates, along with gentler slopes at Kreuzboden for beginners and families.
Kreuzboden, the mid-station, has a reputation as a family area with a children's zone and a long sledging run. Experienced skiers can explore off-piste routes and ski tours with a guide. With the Saas valley lift pass, you can also ski at Saas-Fee, Saas-Almagell and Saas-Balen, which gives considerable variety without changing accommodation.
Village life in the Saas valley
Saas-Grund is the main village of the Saas valley floor, with a traditional character, a church and a mix of old wooden chalets and newer buildings. It is calm and unpretentious, and many visitors choose it as a quieter, more relaxed base compared with Saas-Fee, which lies a short bus ride up the hill.
The valley offers plenty for non-skiers: winter walking trails, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing along the valley floor, ice skating and sledging. Saas-Fee, with its car-free centre and glacier views, is easy to visit for an evening or a day.
The Saas valley has a strong mountaineering heritage, and Saas-Grund is a base for climbers in summer who tackle the Weissmies and Lagginhorn. In winter, that heritage is visible in the number of mountain guides and in the ski touring routes that start from the valley. Small chapels along old footpaths linking the villages are another reminder of the valley's long history.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from December to April. Thanks to its high altitude, Hohsaas often keeps good snow conditions into spring. February is busiest with school holidays; January and March tend to be quieter.
- Declare skis and snowboards when booking so the vehicle has room.
- Allow for snow on the Saas valley road, which can slow progress.
- Request child seats in advance when travelling with children.
- Pack for high altitude: cold mornings and strong sun.
If your group includes both beginners and experienced skiers, the valley pass allows everyone to choose the most suitable area each day.
The return to Geneva Airport
On departure day, allow the full 2 hours 30 minutes plus a margin for snow and traffic. Aim to reach Geneva Airport two hours before your flight. The Rhône valley motorway can be busy on Saturday afternoons, especially around Lausanne, so an earlier start is sensible.
The Saas valley road is the only road in and out, so after a heavy snowfall it can take a little longer to clear. If a big storm is forecast, we will contact you about adjusting the pick-up time. For early flights, we can collect you at any hour, as we run 24/7.
