Ponte di Legno
Ponte di Legno is about 484 km from Geneva Airport, and the drive takes around 5 hours 50 minutes. The route crosses into Italy, follows Lake Como and the Valtellina, climbs over the Aprica Pass and then heads up the Valcamonica to this old mountain village in the province of Brescia. A private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch takes care of the whole journey, from the arrivals hall to your accommodation, so the long drive becomes a comfortable part of the holiday rather than a puzzle of connections.

The route from Geneva Airport
The journey begins with a long crossing of Switzerland, typically via Bern and Zurich to Chur and then south through the San Bernardino Tunnel into Ticino, although your chauffeur may choose another Alpine crossing depending on traffic and conditions. The route enters Italy and follows the shores of Lake Como to its northern end, then turns east into the Valtellina past Sondrio. At Tresenda the road climbs to the Aprica Pass and descends to Edolo in the Valcamonica, before the final climb up the valley to Ponte di Legno. The last part is mountain road through villages, and the overall journey is one of the longer transfers from Geneva, so a comfort stop is usually planned along the way. The high Gavia Pass, which links Ponte di Legno with Bormio in summer, is closed in winter.
The ski area: Pontedilegno-Tonale
Ponte di Legno is linked by lifts with the Passo del Tonale, forming the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area, part of the larger Adamello Ski region. From the village, lifts climb through forest to the slopes above Ponte di Legno, which offer pleasant, often tree-lined runs that are sheltered and good for visibility on grey days. A connection then leads to the high, open slopes of the Tonale and up to the Presena glacier, where the snow is generally reliable even late in the season. This combination is the strength of the area: you can sleep in a traditional village at lower altitude and still ski high, snow-sure terrain during the day. Runs are mostly red and blue, with some more challenging descents, and freeride opportunities with a guide.
For families and beginners, the slopes above the village offer gentle areas and a calmer atmosphere than the busier pass. Experienced skiers will want to spend at least one clear day on the glacier and the long descents that link back down to Ponte di Legno at the end of the afternoon.
The village
Ponte di Legno has the charm of a real mountain town, with stone houses, narrow streets, a central square with cafés and shops, and an old church. It has long been a holiday destination for families from Milan and Brescia, which gives it a lively but civilised atmosphere, particularly at weekends. Accommodation ranges from traditional hotels to apartments and holiday homes. The surrounding valleys are part of the Adamello and Stelvio protected areas, with beautiful winter walks, snowshoe routes and cross-country trails. Further down the Valcamonica, the prehistoric rock engravings, a UNESCO World Heritage site, make an interesting excursion on a non-ski day.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from late November or December to April, with the Presena glacier allowing skiing early and late in the season. January and March are often quieter, while the Christmas period, February and Italian holiday weekends are busier. Snow chains must be carried on Italian mountain roads in winter, and our vehicles are equipped for such conditions. With nearly six hours on the road, plan an early flight into Geneva to arrive before evening. Declare skis and boots at booking, and request child seats if travelling with young children.
The return journey
Count on around six hours for the return to Geneva Airport, plus check-in time. An afternoon or evening flight is strongly recommended. Your chauffeur will agree a departure time in advance and allow extra time for weather or weekend traffic.
