Passo del Tonale

Passo del Tonale is a ski resort on a high mountain pass between Lombardy and Trentino, about 495 km from Geneva Airport, and the drive takes around six hours. The route crosses into Italy, follows Lake Como and the Valtellina, climbs over the Aprica Pass, continues up the Valcamonica past Ponte di Legno and finishes at the top of the Tonale Pass. With AirportsTransfers.ch the whole journey is a single private transfer, with your skis and luggage in the vehicle from start to finish.

  • Distance from GVA: about 495 km
  • Drive time: around 6 hours
  • Border crossing: yes, the route crosses from Switzerland into Italy
  • Ski area: Pontedilegno-Tonale with the Presena glacier
  • Best for: snow-sure skiing, long seasons, ski-in ski-out stays

The route from Geneva Airport

This is one of the longest ski transfers from Geneva, and planning makes all the difference. The route crosses Switzerland, usually via Bern, Zurich and Chur, and passes through the San Bernardino Tunnel into Ticino, unless your chauffeur selects another crossing on the day. It then enters Italy and follows Lake Como north before heading east along the Valtellina. Beyond Sondrio, the road climbs over the Aprica Pass to Edolo, then follows the Valcamonica up to Ponte di Legno, and finally climbs the last bends to the Tonale Pass. The final ascent is short but at high altitude, and in snowy weather it requires winter equipment and experience. A comfort stop and a lunch break are easy to fit into the journey, so the day feels less like a marathon and more like a scenic crossing of the Alps.

The ski area and the Presena glacier

The Tonale is all about altitude. The resort sits right on the pass, well above the treeline, so the slopes are wide, open and generally snow-sure from late autumn into spring. Lifts climb on both sides of the pass, and a cable car takes you up to the Presena glacier, where the highest runs are found and where skiing is possible at the beginning and end of the season when lower resorts struggle. The terrain suits intermediates and progressing skiers particularly well, with long blue and red runs and plenty of space, while the glacier and a few steeper pistes provide challenges for stronger skiers. Freeride options around the Presena exist for those with a guide. The Tonale is linked by lifts with Ponte di Legno, which adds forested runs down to the Lombardy side, ideal on grey days when visibility on the open pass is poor.

The high, exposed setting does have a downside: the pass can be windy and cold, and in bad weather the upper lifts may close. On those days, skiing down towards Ponte di Legno or exploring the Trentino side towards the Val di Sole is the best option.

The resort on the pass

Passo del Tonale is a purpose-built resort, with hotels and apartments lining the road over the pass and lifts starting just steps away. It is practical rather than picturesque, and that is its appeal: you can walk out of the door with your skis and be on the slopes in minutes, which suits families and keen skiers alike. The pass has a strong historical dimension too. During the First World War it lay on the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary, in a high-mountain conflict often called the White War, and memorials and remains from that period are found in the area. Evenings are relaxed, with Italian food and wine in a mountain setting.

When to go and practical tips

The season is long, often running from November to April or early May, thanks to the altitude and the glacier. Early and late season are excellent for snow-sure trips with fewer people. Christmas, February and Easter are busy. Snow chains must be carried on Italian mountain roads, and our vehicles are fully equipped for high-altitude winter driving. The pass is high, so the sun is strong and the air dry: bring sunglasses, sun cream and warm layers. Declare skis and luggage when booking.

The return journey

Allow around six hours to return to Geneva Airport, plus time for check-in. An evening flight, or a final night closer to Geneva for morning departures, is the most relaxed approach. Your chauffeur will agree a departure time with you and adapt to weather on the pass.
