Livigno

Livigno is about 483 km from Geneva Airport, and the drive takes around 5 hours 25 minutes. The most direct winter route crosses Switzerland to Klosters, takes the Vereina car train to the Engadine, continues past Zernez and enters Italy through the Munt la Schera tunnel, which opens directly into the Livigno valley. AirportsTransfers.ch organises the whole trip as one private transfer, so you can relax from the arrivals hall to your hotel.

  • Distance from GVA: about 483 km
  • Drive time: around 5 h 25
  • Border crossing: yes, from Switzerland into Italy at the Munt la Schera tunnel
  • Ski areas: Mottolino and Carosello 3000, on either side of the valley
  • Best for: snow-sure skiing, freestyle, long seasons

The route from Geneva Airport

The journey starts across Switzerland: Lake Geneva, Bern, Zurich and the shores of Lake Zurich and Lake Walen, before turning into the Prättigau at Landquart and climbing to Klosters. There the car boards the Vereina train, which runs through the mountain to the Lower Engadine. From the Engadine side the road continues to Zernez and heads up towards the Ofen Pass through the edge of the Swiss National Park, then turns off to the Munt la Schera tunnel. This narrow tunnel runs alongside the Livigno reservoir and operates with alternating one-way traffic, so short waits are normal. On the far side you emerge in Italy, at the northern end of the Livigno valley. Other approaches, via Bormio and the Foscagno Pass, exist, but the route through Switzerland is usually the most practical from Geneva.

The ski areas

Livigno lies in a long, high valley, and its skiing is spread along both sides. On one side, Mottolino is known for its freestyle culture, with a widely known terrain park offering lines for every level, from first small jumps to large kickers, and a lively atmosphere on and off the slopes. On the other side, Carosello 3000 offers long, varied runs and the resort's highest skiing, with wide views over the surrounding peaks. Between them, a series of lifts and gentle slopes rise directly from the village, ideal for beginners and children. The altitude of the whole valley means snow is generally reliable from late November to the end of April or early May, and the dry, cold climate often keeps snow in good condition. Livigno was a host venue for snowboard and freestyle events at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, which confirmed its reputation in those disciplines.

Free ski buses link the different lift stations along the valley, so it is easy to switch sides depending on the weather and snow. Cross-country skiers have a long, well-prepared trail along the valley floor, and the area is popular with athletes training at altitude.

The village

Livigno is a long village that stretches for several kilometres along the valley, with a lively main street lined with shops, restaurants and bars. Traditional wooden and stone houses sit alongside more modern hotels and apartments. The atmosphere is energetic, with a young crowd drawn by the parks and the après-ski, but there are quieter areas at either end of the valley. Food reflects the Valtellina: pizzoccheri, polenta, cured meats and local cheeses. Because the valley is high, cold evenings are the rule, and the starry skies on clear nights are spectacular.

When to go and practical tips

Livigno's season is one of the longest in the Alps, often from late November to early May. December and January are cold with good snow, March and April bring sunshine and spring conditions. Saturday is the main changeover day. Snow chains must be carried on Italian mountain roads, and our vehicles are equipped for the high-altitude winter conditions. Altitude can tire travellers on the first day, so drink plenty of water and take it easy. Declare skis and snowboards at booking so the vehicle has enough space.

The return journey

Allow five and a half hours for the drive back to Geneva Airport, including waiting time at the Munt la Schera tunnel and the Vereina train, plus check-in. An afternoon or evening flight is strongly recommended. Your chauffeur will agree the pick-up time with you the day before.
